Which dirrection is your collection headed...

Traditionals. I got into tacticals for several years, but over the last year+ I've gotten back into the Stockman & Whittler patterns, for the work I do.

thx - cpr

besides my purchases slowing drastically, ive noticed the knives getting smaller and less tactical, the need for a lock is also dwindling(besides my new minigrip)

I collect primarily folders from Buck, Kershaw, Spyderco and Benchmade, with a smattering of Cold Steel and the occasional Ka-Bar. I do a lot of homework on my potential purchases, so I have never felt the need to sell any that I own. However, I do have one problem. As much as I would like to, I am unable to practice any consistent brand loyalty. I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but my attention is like a Budgie, flipping from brand to brand.

I guess if I was ever to be called a 'fanboy', I would be a fanboy of most well made knives, regardless of brand.

I do also have some custom fixed blades. But folders are mainly what I collect & use.

I love single bladed slippies. Currently I have 2 Alsdorf (want more) & a Vining (want more of his work too.), as far as my custom slippies.

I started out 14 years ago with a Gerber LST and Gator serrator
had a S&W SWAT, gave that away
moved into CRKTs with a Tanto KISS and M16 14 Tanto
Went to Cold Steels with a Ti-Lite and a Desperado
then moved on to Spyderco with a Chinook and the "Q"
Got a TOPS wolf pup that I haven't used much at all, stays in my tool bag
I've settled on Benchmades, with an Osborne 940, and a Pardue 530 as my go-to folders for work and light carry when I'm gigging or running sound.
My last acquisition is a Spyderco Kumo, which is my current EDC along with the "Q" for when I'm at the office.

I'm sticking with Benchmade Axis locks for any new folders henceforth, unless I see something that really impresses me. As far as fixed blades are concerned, I will only drop dime on one that I can use for low profile EDC. And no display or collection knives. I only buy what I can use.

For the moment, My interest is in fixed blades, and inexpensive folders that are twice what they're worth in quality. (like Byrds, and Buck's new Vantage and Bucklite MAX series).

I'm becoming more and more gentlemanly with my knives I suppose. Don't tell anyone! :jerkit:

I used to collect a little bit of everything. Gradually, my custom collection changed from mostly "tactical" folders (with a few fixed blades thrown in for good measure) to higher end (some of which would be considered "art knives") folders and fixed blades. I especially liked to focus on pieces from Texas makers such as David Broadwell, Joe Kious, Harvey Dean, et al. I started to get a little burned out/bored with knife collecting and decided to take some time off (which ended up being a couple of years...).

Fast forward to late last year. I started to get back into the swing of things a little bit and decided, for the time being at least, that I would be happy with a few users and no "safe queens" so most of the factory pieces were sold off and most of the customs have either been sold or are currently on consignment. Right now I'm just enjoying being back on BF and am content with collecting vicariously through everyone's posts.

I started off with swords and have been continuously spreading into just about everything! I'm a huge fan of gentleman's/dress knives, have plenty of hard-use pieces, and even a few just for the sake of it because I think they're too cool not to have. I mostly strike a balance between gentleman's knives (looking at a Nagara) for work, and wilderness knives for play. Working at a knife store, though, I can carry whatever I want. I just like an excuse to carry the classy stuff. :)

I half expected you to say that you reached 42 knives as your goal :D

Benchmade 520/525's--Buck 110's(reg & custom)--Buck fixed blades(ie 119--102-105...)--pretty much have all the colors of SAK alox(cadet--pioneer--farmer)--Spyderco Endura and Delica's---Case trappers---a couple 3-4 Bark Rivers--Forstner(sp?) kitchen knives---have some old Puma's and Gerber's(just purchased a new 154CM Gator)----all sorts of odds and ends.

So ya---I'm all over the place----just buy what I like.

Started more than 20 years ago as a teen buying a few folders, then more folders, then ninja cool sharp things. All was kept brand new in the box as a collection began to grow.

Through the years, I`ve sold, givin away or traded most of it, but my affliction with folders is still strong today, although now, I use everything I own. I get more satisfaction now using these tools as they were intended, getting to test the different steels, either high end or low end, learning how different grinds work for different cutting tasks and so on.

Slippies keep find their way back into the rotation too. They will never be in the same "class" as modern day big folders, in fact the only thing they have in common is that they each have an edge that is sharp. They are merely 2 of the many ways to enjoy all things sharp.

I have several hundred folders, of all kinds. Latley I have found myself just buying Whatever as far as production goes. I was on an All Black G-10 kick for a while and have dozens of knives in Black G-10 with Satin/Beadblast or Black blades. I used to be on a SAK kick and bought whatever they put out as well. I dont know where my production folder future lies, I just buy what looks cool and usually keep em as I know someday I'll have kids and grandkids that I want to pass them on too.

Custom folders I like elegant knives now with clean lines.

Production fixed blades...Choppers and hunters. I am always looking for the baddest chopper. This goes for customs too but at a slower pace. Busse's have really helped fill this niche as far as choppers go.

I really like alot of what Busse puts out and I generally get one or a few of several of the models that family has.

Custom Hunters and Bowies I really have always been into but latley I have found myself looking at fighters more and more. I really like integrals now where before I didnt see myself getting one.

Towards not collecting and instead, using. Not buying and instead, saving money. Selling what I don't use etc...

I have around 100 knives and feel some saturation. There are other designs that tempt me but I expect I'll buy few of them.
A few style elements:
- a tendency towards gentlemen / hunting knives
- a love for elegant Japanese and French pocket knives.
- no "tacticool" knives except a ZT200, and a Boker Plus Trance.
- The ZT200 is the only one with a black blade, a feature which I intensely dislike
- no tanto blades
- only one micarta handled one (a pretty Moki)
- all kinds of locks (or slippies)
- Except for a selection of approx 10 Spydercos, only a few American knives: no Benchmade, no SOG, no Cold Steel, 1 Kershaw, 2 CRKTs, 2 Bucks
- Lately the realisation that in general, I don't really care about Damascus

I collect diversity. I don't want to have the same thing over and over again. Plus my wife has told me that I have to have a folder for every day of the year.

Plus I have been buying color much more, plus I want every blade steel known to man.
