Which do you like better, black or shiny?

Black
I've been considering one if these as of late. The cosmetics aren't a concern for me, but I would think the black would be easier to touch up and you wouldn't have to deal with the concerns of flaking.

Does one hold any long term advantage over the other?

Have you looked into something like Cerakote? It's a little pricey, but the size of you're forges, it shouldn't take much and It's good past 2000 degrees and can withstand severe/rapid temperature changes. A gallon of Glacier Black is $389, but I'd think a gallon would do more than a few forges. They even have one that's an insulation barrier typically used inside performance exhaust manifold to retain heat.

Cera(mic)Kote is basically just a high quality version of the black ceramic paint I'm using now. The ideal solution would be something that could be applied in an industrial setting similar to plating.
