I have a long standing order with a local maker for two of his Kepharts, one regular size, and one small size, coming up next spring. I have also been admiring the Bark River Kephart design. I have tried the Nessmuk design, and did not like it. I have seen the Hudson Bay camp knife design, and I am very curious about its performance. The only reason I want the Kephart is because of its design, and the pieces from the same maker I have seen online. Other than that, I have nothing to base the performance of the design on. Out of the three above, which is your favorite, and why?

I have never used a Kephart design, and have never used the Hudson Bay design, but have seen many different makers interpretations of them. I have seen and owned several Nessmuk designs from various makers, none ordered btw but picked up in trades, and while the design is interesting, it is not for me.

What tasks are better suited to the Kephart, the Nessmuk and the Hudson Bay style? Obviously, skinning for the Nessmuk, and chopping for the Hudson Bay.

Yeah, its apples and oranges, and watermelons in the case of the Hudson, but they are three very popular designs. In case you didn't know, without even using one, my favorite is the Kephart ;).

This is a trick question right? :D

get one of each.

i agree...:D

i have long since been a fan of both the nessmuk and kephart designs.. the nessmuk did take a little getting used to... it does however excel in the camp/kitchen...

the kephart is a great all around utility style knife...

I've never owned a Kephart but it's essentially a bushcraft type shape and I like that.

Nessmuks really depend so much on who makes them it's hard to say. I love the ones I have that are thin and have a curved edge.

Love the Hudson Bay that BRKT is coming out with and may end up getting one but not sure I see a use other than butchering that is not covered by the numerous khukuris and axes I own;)

I think it would come down to if you Kephart and Nessmuk were the same size and thickness how much you would value the wide nessmuk blade versus how much you use a fine point. (Although some nessmuks have a fine point and some Kepharts don't)

l like the kephart since it's like a bushcraft knife with some belly.

The Nessmuks I have; like H.D. says depends on the maker. I prefer the thinner ones like Fiddleback makes. It whittles wood just fine and I also just recently found it to excell at cleaning fish.

Like Ilbruche said. Get both!
