Hey everyone,

The more I look at the Spyderco Dodo the more I think I need to have one. Some confession, huh?

I'm kind of torn on the color and the edge though, Should I go with the spyderedge or plain edge? The blade shape leads me to believe that spyderedge would be a nice cutter. The knife would be used for all around utility purposes.

Could anyone with a Dodo or Dodos post some pictures of the two colors in real world conditions so I can see how this little beast looks and how they compare to each other?

I have a PE that hasn't left my pocket since I got it a month ago. For what I do - cutting lots of packing material, fine detail work - nothing I have used touches the Dodo. I should say that I was a complete skeptic, so this is not a 'throw away' endorsement. I don't see the need to go SE with the Dodo, but I don't like SE generally.

Check the pics at New Graham - they are pretty much true to colour.

I'll second that. The DoDo blade design is so aggressive, it will pierce and slice coarse material without serrations ... it's sort of one big serration itself.

As far as color goes, I like the blue. Black, black, black everything else, enough already! I got a blue Native to go with it. :)

I've got to agree with Esav on the color. The blue makes a nice change from all the black knives (although I do like the gray on my Calypso Jr.).

Regarding the edge, I bought the SE for a change of pace (it's currently the only SE I own). I use it mostly around a lake, cutting rope, cardboard, nets (oh, I guess that's still rope), and whatever else. So far, I like it. I'm hoping sharpening won't be as daunting a task as I anticipate.

Sort of an "inexperienced" endorsement of the SE, but, hey...it's something. :D

I traded for a black PE Dodo about a month ago. Love it. So last week I bought a blue PE. I personally don't like SE on such a short blade. I generally prefer PE, HOWEVER, my SE Paramilitary is one of my all-time favorites. I'd vote for PE, one of each color.

How do you know that, if it hasn't left your pocket?

Before you try to sharpen serrations, take a steel to them. This will probably bring the edges back well enough to put off actually sharpening for a while longer!

I never sharpen my Vaquero Grande. I just steel the back of those tiny Cold Steel serrations and straighten them right up. :D

How DO you sharpen a PE dodo?

I use a crock stick, working on the two curves - the 'belly' and the inside curve just below the tip - seperately. I strop on the corner of a strop that I made, which has the leather wrapped around the corner of a board - either that or I use 2000 grit paper wrapped around the crock stick.

How DO you sharpen a PE dodo?

I've been wondering the same thing. Has anyone sharpened it with scary sharp results on a Spyderco Sharpmaker? How do you go about it?

You know, I might need proof of this too. So just show me both of your Dodos side to side, blue and black, that might work. :)

But seriously, anyone have both with some pictures? I've seen the blue but I have yet to see a good picture of the black.

Got a black PE that does everything my SE Endura does and more! Like a box cutter on steroids ! Go for the PE. , as this knife is for push cuts rather than sawing slices due to the curve of the blade. (The Civilian curve is not as tight and the SE works for that application)
The ball lock mechanism is very cool and easy to modify.
Makes for a very quick opening knife, and one hand closure for right or left handers. Color is an individual thing. Blue looks like it should be in your girl’s handbag.

I wouldn't recommend using a steel on a Spyderco serration unless it's a "cats eye" (elipse) and the small radius is less that .031 radius. A round steel will just hit the tips and distort them without ever getting inside the teeth. A 204 used slowly on the corners is my recommendation for sharpening SpyderEdges.

BTW, thanx for the kind words on the Dodo.

I've use the Sharpmaker a few times on my Dodo, and I find it no more difficult to sharpen than less-intersting blades. About 5 minutes to hair-poppin'. I only use the corners, and I've found that I prefer to only use the grey (medium grit?) sticks, and not do a final set of strokes with the white (finer grit). Using only the grey leaves larger micro-serrations and I find the blade cuts a bit more aggresively when I sharpen it this way. It's a little more "grabby", and I like that. As I sharpen I do rotate the blade as I move along it, so that the edge is more or less perpendicular to the sharpening stick at all times. I don't know if this little dance is absolutely necessary, but you get into the groove pretty quick and it's not a big deal.

I just got my blue PE in the mail yesterday. Definitely a keeper. I can post a pic of the two tomorrow morning if someone doesn't beat me to it.

I still say get one of each color, both PE.

i've got a Blue PE and i love it! great looking color, perfect blade design. i agree, i don't see a need for serrations on the dodo. you get so much tip to work with plus the recurve. cutting is SOOOOOOOOOOOO easy. just be careful :)

Here's a few pics. Not an absolutely straight-up comparison, as I have done some work on my black Dodo with the dremel. I'm going to leave the blade alone on the blue, but I have plans to chop down the scales more than I did on the black. My apologies to the purists out there. Should be able to get an idea of how the colors compare. Hope it helps.

Watch that tip! I flicked the blade open and dragged it on my hand. HOLY CRAP! (still have that scar)

Why cut the hole in the DODO? It does look good. But I'm wondering what perpose it serves? Someone had to ask.
