Wife asked me the other day what I'd like for Xmas, and aside from INFI, something that crossed my mind is an Edge Pro Sharpening System.

Though I do want to get better at the sandpaper/mouse pad system, I'd still like to put an Edge Pro edge on some of my knives. So...

Which version do you guys use? I like the looks of this "complete" system with all the different grits and accessories? Is there a different version I ought to be examining?

Yep the complete set is the way to go :thumbup:

Guyon,
That's the same one I have for the same price I paid! They are excellant!

I bought the complete (package 3) Apex system from 1sharpknife and could not be happier. It looks like the package changed from a 600 to an 800 grit stone but other than that its much the same. http://www.1sharpknife.com The owner is a member here and very prompt to answer questions and to ship. Highly recommended!

Thats a good kit, its the same one I bought years ago. they do have a better model made of metal I haven had any problems with the plastic one.
here's a web sight if you want to check out more. http://edgeproinc.com/
Just remember use the blue painters tape on it , it will keep the grit from embedding in the plastic.

Same one I've got

Biggest difference I see with the full kits from different suppliers is the fine stone 600 vs 800

Anyone have the aluminum (Pro) model? I'm contemplating getting it, not a fan of plastic.

I have the apex and it is great. After putting huge edges on a lot of my knives, I got on BF and got some help and now I love the system.

I have the Apex version as well. If you are going to be sharpening knives for a living, you might want to consider the Pro version.

I have the Apex model. It's a great kit, but in all practicality, I barely use it. I prefer to use stones and mousepad/sanpaper. I don't like having to get it all setup, and then cleanup afterwards. This is just my personal opinion. I still thinks it's useful, especially if you need to rebevel a knife.

i cant see any downside to getting the complete system.

allows you to put any variety of edges on your blades, from a working rough edge, all the way to a highly polished edge.

id guess if you bought the basic, eventually you would buy all the other stones and the sandpaper blank anyway.

I have to agree with all the others. I bought the "Apex Complete Kit" and love it. It's pricey but worth it IMHO. I can put a wicked edge on in no time. It comes with a handy instructional DVD. I put a nice edge on my SAR with the first try. The 2000 grit sandpaper on the aluminum holder allows you to have a mirror finish that will take the skin off when shaving your arm hair if you are not very careful.

I've got the Apex (complete) and love it.

One suggestion - When I ordered mine, I got a couple of extra Course stones, and I'd do that again. They go quickest, and most of your blades will need to be worked over with them at first.

The two coarse is a good idea. In fact that and Med are the only stones I use. After those I hit the knife with a strop or sand paper/ mouse pad and the knives are good to go for a long long time. After some use I just strop them and it is rear to have to hit them with stones again.

I have the PRO model and it is super solid :thumbup: I figured that if I am going to spend that much on a sharpening system I might as well get the best one ;) I have been happy with it since the day I got it which is probably close to 8 or 9 years.

I agree with Ban.

I've had my Pro for about 8 years now, and it has definitely earned its keep.

i have a question. if you were to shrink the edge angle down a bit would you sand some of the crinkle off first or just attack with out mercy with the EP?

I wish I had gone with the pro model. had I known how good the system was, I'd have spent the extra money.

be careful not to nick the plastic table, it will make sharpening small blades much harder, as you will have less flat table area to work with.

I've gone through 3 of the 100 grit stones so far, so getting extra's is good. and I've found that I sail through the 2000 grit tape, so if your getting that you may want to get extra as well. but thats only if your going to be doing polishing.

the 100's were mostly spent on heavy re profiling jobs.
