Which Emerson Do YOU Recommend

I am looking at purchase a folding blade pocketknife to carry with me when I begin my FTO training. I have heard good things about Emerson knives and I would like to know which model(s) the people on this board prefer. If you're in the frame of mind to do so, feel free to tell me why you prefer the model you do.

I know some LEO's carry knives as a backup weapon but I have no training in that area and my intentions are simply to use it for utility functions (i.e. cutting people free of seatbelts, etc.). Since most of my "toys" tend to get beat up and really put through the ringer, I'm looking for a medium-expensive knife that is very durable and has a good warranty.

Thank you for any information you can give me.

First of all, welcome to the Forums !

I'm an LEO in the UK and I carry a CQC7 as my main knife at the moment. It isn't the top of the range Emerson, nor even the most recent development. But in all the times I've used it, it hasn't failed me, and that's the most important thing for me.

If you can get hold of one (and I think they are all sold out now), try for a CQC7 with the 'wave' opening feature. That should serve you very well.

This is my first post. I've been lurking for a while now, but now it's time to take the plunge. I love Emerson's knives. For the money I think they are really a good value. Having said that, I would recommend the CQC7B, preferably with the bead blast finish for heavy work. The chisel grind blade is good for heavy use, as are serrations, and it is really easy to sharpen. You can get the CQC7's for less than $90 from places like Discountknives.com or 1sks.com. If you want the wave feature, call Emerson directly and see if they have any more Waved CQC7's($169.99), or call Extreme Outfitters for a SOCFK ($149.99). I own a Green-T SOCFK [#051], and I love it. So much in fact that I have another on the way. Still anxiously awaiting my waved CQC7B.

I would like to suggest either a Commander with satin finish, or a SARK. It really depends on your preference. If you feel there is a possibility that you will respond to a scene that requires a person be cut out of seatbelts or clothing, then the SARK might be best since it is designed for this.
The Commander is an excellent choice for a pocket fighter/ back up.
Either way get something Emerson with the wave.

The wave is a neat feature but it probably should not be the deciding factor in which Emerson you buy.
I think that the wave can limit the way that you carry the knife and is really not necessary on a knife like the commander. I can draw and snap the commader open very quickly and with less of a "missfire" rate than with the wave.
I would tend to get something with a point because they come in handy for a range of utility tasks unrelated to combat.
I like the SPECWAR a lot because it has a gaurd which is something that I feel is critical on a "hard use" knife. I am really smooth when I am practicing but if I had to cut something or "whatever" very quickly and under duress it would probably include my own fingers if the knife did not have a guard. Call me a klutz but I like my digits just the way they are.

Personally I prefer the Commander, but if you like a smaller knife, it'll be had to beat a waved CQC7B.

Having said that, I really kind of dig the SOCFK. It's actually a "best buy" at $149 retail.

OK, the Commander is really the coolest of the Emersons. There, I said it. Quite liberating if I do say so. I think that you will soon be able to get a Commander without a Wave which is what I want to get (Sorry John, couldn't resist!
