Which first Khukuri?

Welcome Khalnath!!!! :D

I'm a little short and heavy feller that used to be taller and I like the 18" AK as an all around Heavy Khuk. For most stuff and for general lugging around, the 17"-18" GRS also known as the BGRS is just a damned good all around do most everything khuk.
Of course you might wait a while and see if the 17" Foxy Folly ever comes in correct in both length and weight and try to snag an extra if there are any.  :D
That Khuk is gonna be the Kick Ass of All Khuks IMO!!!!!!! :D

Welcome to the Cantina Khalnath!

Take a look at the M-43 model also. It runs in the 17-18 inch range, and I really like the way it chops. I think that it gives the 18" AK a run for its money in chopping and feels great in the hand with its graceful forward curving and nice curved handle. :D It is a great looker also. It is also a slab handle if that matters. Take a look!

It'd be primarily a hunting and camping tool, and I'm a pretty big guy (6'3" with broad shoulders and big hands). I'm looking at the Ang Khola, but not sure what length. I like the idea of the Chiruwa, but I hear it transmits a lot more vibration than the standard handles.

So, how about some advice? General pointers for a Khukuri newbie would be welcome also.
Khalnath,

Welcome to the HI forum. I bought my first khuk in January, a M43, and haven't stopped since. I am 5' 10" and use a large glove. I favor an 18 to 20 inch khuk from 28 to 32 ozs for camping/woods use. I thought about a 16.5" chiruwa AK, but now that I have a variety including some smaller ones 15 inches and less I know I like the longer lengths but not over 25 inches. The models I like the best are the BGRS, AK, and Tin chirra(rarer). I also like the Sirupati, Gelbu Special, Chitlangi, Chainpuri, and Kobra as narrower blade models in 20 to 23 inches. Hopefully I am not confusing you. Different models have different characteristics and I llike so many of them. I think of a khuk first as a tool, then secondly as a weapon if needed and so 28 to 32 ozs is good for me. Since you are larger you can handle that weight range or a little more easily.

In other words, a little over half of all the blades HI offers are his favorites....the remainder he just likes a lot.

Aint it the truth.

My first was an 18" AK and boy has it ever served me well. With your size, you could probably get away with a 20" AK too... I find my 18" the one that I take everywhere... It stays ready in my truck for brush clearing needs.

It can handle most anything you throw at it unless you really go crazy and take down bigger trees, in which case, you'd probably have an axe or chainsaw around...

Get the one that draws you most and if it doesn't work for you, try another...

(If it does work for you, try another anyway. :D )

Hey, another BCer. :)

At this point, I'm pretty much settled on the 18" AK. I also tend to view Khukuries as tools first and weapons second... Though the chances of me ever having to use one as a weapon are thankfully slim.

That's what guns are for. *evil grin*

For the record, some extra large gloves don't fit me. Some do. Hand me a large glove and I'll do my OJ impression.

To add to the confusion, if you plan to carry the khuk on a belt, you might want to stick with 16.5" or 15". I've found that my longer models (18" and above) don't carry all that well. However, if you rig it diagonally across you back or chest, or tuck it in a pole pocket or crosslacing on a pack, 18" and longer are fine.

But a khuk never runs out of ammo or jams....:D

most non-military confrontations occur at 7 yds. or less, and it has been proven that in the time it takes to clear your weapon, take aim & fire, a knife-wielder can cover the distance and get in a good stab (or slash).;)

I just bought my first khukri...an 18" WWII and I love it.
The only problem I've had so far is the butt cap came a little loose. A tube of #8 Lepages fixed that little problem...that butt cap ain't never coming off again.
Oh and it rides remarkably well too.
