Which folder for general use?

I like the Mini-Cyclone a lot. I have a review for it half written up that I never got around to finishing. :o It's actually very ergonomic and feels very good in hand in a variety of grips from saber to reverse (sorry I'm not familiar with what a 'fencer' grip is); you can switch the AO option off if you like. It is built like a tank, so in that respect it would make a good workhorse.

Thanks for all the replies! Following some recommendations, I looked at the BM Griptilian and Spyderco Native as well. I seem to go against the common desire for a tip up carry, like these knives have, and prefer tip down. My old EDC was tip down and I just got used to that I guess. The Native was a pleasant surprise though, I was expecting the older style Spyderco that just doesn't feel right in my hand. The Native is different enough that it might be okay.

There are certainly more models available in this price range than I first thought, I'll have to look around here a bit more to see if I can find someone who has these in stock. The only way to make up my mind at this point is to get them in my hand and see which feels best to me.

The "fencer" grip is probably the same as a saber grip... I've always used it but never had a name for it until a friend called it that. It's a blade forward grip with the thumb along the spine.

Once again, thanks for all the replies. I might have to get used to something different - tip up vs. down, AO, newer steels, there's been a lot of changes in "pocket" knives since I last bought one! Change is good though, when it leads to improvements in quality and choices.

Benchmade 740/745 Dejavoo!

Its not out yet, but dont make a move until it comes out. Don't know about you guys, but IMO Dejavoo is a must get this year:D

Well, after a much more thorough search of what's available I've reached a conclusion. What I've decided on is to pick up a couple cheaper knives to hold me over until I can shell out the big bucks for a really good folder. After reading reviews of the Byrd line, I think I'll get the Cara Cara G10 and a Meadowlark lightweight. Hell, I can get both for what the Vex or Mini-Cyclone cost, and have an option for EDC. The lightweight for normal use, and the Cara Cara for work or out in the sticks.

Although these look like the older model Spydercos, the main reason I didn't like Spydercos was simply because they were a new design (way back then) and I wasn't used to them. For the price of these Byrds, I'll give them a try... who knows, I might even learn to like 'em!

Great choice, I love my Byrds. I own a G-10 and a Lightweight, the only difference is that both of mine are the Meadowlark. The Cara Cara is just a larger than I normally EDC. Enjoy.

Spyderco didn't appeal to me, either- until I bought one to see what all the fuss was about. Now it's been my EDC for 8 years even after accumulating several other USA brands. Models made in Golden, CO can be purchased under $50. Don't rule them out without handling one for a few minutes. They fit my pockets as well as they do my hand, a worthwhile consideration.

I just order a Kershaw G-10 Knife Leek with Premium S30V Blade 1660CGT for $62.74, if that fit you budget. The ebay seller has 1 more left.

kind of weird...

i bought one of these knives a while ago. it is definitely one the limited 250 run. looking at this sellers new auctions, he has written in the description, 'just released'.

did kershaw re-release this knife?

if anyone buys one, let us know if it says nov '05 on the blade.

clicky
