Which folder for outdoors use? Which grind is best?

I like Flat Grinds on a folder, the Rat 1 is a very solid outdoor user.

I agree. I used mine hard. I tried to mod it and ruined it, so I decided to see how much it could take before breaking. It was amazing. You will never break one in sensible use.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I have an sak fireman already, so I have a saw and awl. More just wondering which grind is stronger. Does a hollow grind have a weaker edge than a flat grind?

The Ritter's flat grind is hard to beat. It has strength that is comparable to the saber grind, keeps a lot of metal on the blade and toward the tip, but retains slicing abilities which are better than most saber/scandi grinds and the ability to do fine tip work despite the tip being very strong.

Most of the quality folders will have locks strong enough for whatever one can throw at it that isn't intentional abuse. Yes, ZT has some crazy strong fame locks, Cold Steel has knives you can hang an ocean liner anchor on, and Spyderco has produced knives in steels that make ceramic look like mushy cereal, but in reality, the slim spine lock on a Delica or Endura is plenty strong for heavy usage...not to mention the Delica and Endura blades can take significantly more abuse than many other knives, VG-10 is a great general use steel that can take a lot of abuse, and the price is often a fraction of others. I think good frame locks have an advantage in that they can account for more wear without developing blade play.

While a lot of knives are marketed as being "tactical" and for "special operators", the large majority of "special operators" (I usually say first-responders) I know have Delicas/Enduras (or other comparable value-priced, high-performance folders) because they are inexpensive and capable of withstanding the abuse a knife in that role may see...
