Which folder has a blade that......

The Spyderco Civilian, with its long hawk blade, would be perfect. Any balisong, if you can open it skillfully under stress and with appropriate body language. The Cold Steel Ti-Lite is also good.

I hear that Dork Ops has a blade that's listed as being "...of an intimidating blade length..." and that its included bottle opener is good for deterring "...barfights in exotic 3rd world locales." I'm sure it would work on YOUR street  !

Seriously, what kinda question is that- really?!?!?

ETA: the blade I'm thinking of is a fixed blade, sorry. Perhaps one of their wonderful folders could do the same?!?

OK guys.. thanks for the responses.. looks like I should just continue with whatever EDC i have right now and only use it when SHTF... which hopefully should not happen with a bit more awareness and a quick pair of legs...:D

By the way Bors... criminals carry small little knives over here or non at all.. very very few hardcore psychotic ones.. occasionally once in a couple of years, you will have one gun toting criminal that will launch a nationwide manhunt... but besides that, it's pretty much caveman status here... bare knuckles and small knives... hence my question in the first place...:D

I am going with this. The Vaquero and Civilian are the baddest boys on the block in appearance and people cutting power. I always feel if you get to the point of pulling it, then you should be at the point of using it.

Alright, now that the knife therapists have chimed in with their expert advice, (which is the exact same advice I would have given had they not beaten me to it) maybe I will post a scary looking folder. What the heck...

This one would cause me some worry:

I would run from these too:

After reading the rest of this thread, may I add, you should only draw IF:
1) Your life is in true danger which you could establish to another person or in court
2) You cannot leave (I see a lot of people with egos often escalate the situation where they could have just walked away)
3) You actually know how to use the blade, ideally using minimal force to end any confrontation
4) You are willing to cut another human being's flesh (many people are not; if you are not, do not draw a knife as a potential attacker may immediately strike at the sight of a blade)
5) You are willing to face moral and legal consequences of your actions

Pepper Spray is something people like to carry as well. I personally carry a Surefire on top of my blades...the crowned bezel and 100 lumans is usually enough to stun someone without any major damage except an ego.

Did you see that? If not, here it is again.

GET SOME PEPPER SPRAY!!!!

It is "approved" by da cops as bein since it is NON LETHAL, you can use it willy nilly (well maybe not on clerks who send you to the wrong aisle) on anybody. It's pretty safe to assume that a PEPPER SPRAY user did not want to KILL his annoyer (at least that's the "story" ya stick to) and only wanted the trouble to ....stop.

So...he SPRAYED the fool and left the scene. In California, they ADVISE you to leave the scene. Now, yer sposed ta call da cops an tell em about the incident. (and should, if ya think anyone cud reckanize ya)

But it all can be done .... AT A DISTANCE.... I'll repeat that one too.

............... AT A DISTANCE......!!!!

Which is to be considered "good" in altercations of any nature. "At a distance" is always good.

Like grandpappy allus said, "Never criticize a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes, because then when you DO criticize him you will be a mile away and have his shoes.

:D

I think one of the key points some of these guys are trying to get across is:
If you were seriously trained in some form of SD by a proven instructor, you wouldn't be asking this question.

Yes, I think I get the point of some of the guys on the thread... but in the heat of well meaning advice and opinions, I think my point has been missed completely... never mind...

May I just add one thing... pepper spray is illegal where I live.. so go figure..:D

Never pull a knife or gun unless you are psycologically prepared to take another person's like, if necessary. To pull a weapon only for intimidation purposes is looking for trouble. Plus, knives that look intimidating don't go over well with the DA if you happen to end up in court. This is serious business.

I'll play. The Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is the meanest, baddest looking folder that I can think of...Hell, just the sight of it scares me, and normally I don't even fear a rabid junk-yard dog.:D.

...... because of its size/appearance/shape/length would intimidate a potential troublemaker enough for him to back down or think twice about creating trouble or bullying you???

Mind you, I'm not talking about protecting your life here but rather to deter someone looking to have some fun at your expense..

so... what folders can do that??

Answer: None. There is no folder guaranteed to psychologically induce fear in the mind of every possible "someone". There are only folders which may have aesthetic propertics to scare the hell out of ignorant sheeple. Someone wanting to have fun at your expense does not constitute reason for a lethal response. I don't think we missed the point at all.

That's why some many of us responded with "take self defense training." It's the perp's impression of you that starts the ball rolling, not flashing a knife around when they already said something to hurt your feelings.

I figure you're a big boy and you don't need any lectures from me, so I'll just answer your question...

First and foremost, size DOES matter.
Even an untrained idiot is still rather intimidating if he has a big honk'n knife in his hand due to the shear amount of damage he could do with one strike.
If you charge a police officer with a 1" box-cutter, you might get shot, or you might get pepper-sprayed or beaten with a baton or tasered...whatever the cop thinks is the best response.
But if you charge that same cop with a 17" machete I'll bet everything I own that you will definitely get shot!
Size matters!

So, if you really want to pursue this line of thinking (:thumbdn: ) then I would recommend that you get a folder with the biggest and brightest blade you can find.
The Cold Steel Vaquero Grande certainly does seem to fit the bill.

BTW, hawkbills seem to scare folks for some reason, and the bigger the better!
Maybe a Spyderco Spyderhawk?

Good luck (I guess):thumbdn:

I think this is an extremely valid question - Giving someone the advice to go seek out martial arts courses may be the best line of action long term, but it is not an immediate fix to feeling unsafe or "naked" when out of your home. So, for all the tetsusaigas out there who don't feel like spending time training at the moment (including myself), I suggest:

http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=3903

http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8217

or the previously suggested spyderco civilian (I got one...)

I think the folder that is the most intimidating is the one that is protruding from the bad guy. Nothing will ever replace your attitude when confronted by an a-hole. Fair fights are for hollywood, and you need to demoralize whoever it happens to be, ASAP. If you're faced w/ deadly force, then you do what you have to. If you need to bury your thumbs into his eye sockets, oh well. If an ear needs to ripped off, oh well.I suppose it's no time to be a gentleman.

Id get a Timberlin Worden Tactical large. Big folder, sharp, useful and its designed by a self defense teacher. Or you could go with a boot knife like the SOG Pentagon. That would make me SH** my pants if somebody pulled it on me.

Were I in the position for someone to be pulling out a knife to try to scare me, A Microtech Halo 3 Combo Edge would be among the best as far as "pocket" knives.

Something about that "SNICK" makes me all excited!

Buy a Desert Eagle.

I like this one. I'm thinking about making it my EDC!
http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2478

But seriously, when a knife is pulled it's usually dark, and you and the knife are moving (or at least they should be). The chance that the "bad guy" is going to have any idea what you've got is almost zero. Therefore, the only thing that will intimidate anyone would be size. So, the bigger the better. Forget about brandnames and all that. Size counts if you want to intimidate with a knife.

But give yourself the greatest gift. Learn how to use it.

All good stuff here. I would give +1 to the pepper spray idea and have a knife as a backup, but you did say it was illegal. As others have said, don't draw a knife unless you expect to use it. In that regard, I'd figure a nice Spyderco Endura 4 Wave would be a excellent choice due to its size, speed of opening, and general usefulness in other, non-life threatening situations.

Irrespective of a "reponsible" answer, I'll give a crack at your actual question. For "scary" knives besides those mentioned- any hawkbill is pretty scary. I also find "military" style clip/bowie blades can look pretty intimidating. The SOG Trident is one of these and also gets points for the super fast assisted opening.

And so many more.

It will be so much more effective if you look confident in your ability to use it and you look WILLING to use it. Curling your upper lip like an angry dog helps:D .But even then there is no guarantee that they will be intimidated by you and your knife. Have a few back-up plans just in case.
