Which Folder is Quickest to Deploy?

If you need to get a knife out quickly, which one will do it, and how do you carry it on you?

Already having it in your hand and open does not count, neither does having it in your hand and closed.

Fixed blades always work great... but you want folders...

ask anyone who has "seen" Sal Glesser get his millie out... "don't blink".:D

Of all my knives... true speed is a tie between my Timberline Discovery and my SOG Flash II
Both are lightning quick from closed to open!

Emerson Commander, or any Emerson with the "Wave" feature.
Check this: Commander Video

From what I've seen I'd agree. If you have to open the knife after you pull it from your pocket the Commander will always win. If you don't like the Commander I have found the Axis lock BM's to be very fast to deploy. I have a bunch of assited opening knives, but you have to fumble around a bit to get your grip right before you hit the flipper. I find I can get my fingers on the Axis lock and get the blade in motion with less fumbling.

Ditto on the Commander.
And Yes, I have seen Sal open his Millie. Or, I should say that I watched an open knife appear in his hand out of thin air.

Any of the Benchmade AXIS locks will deploy pretty fast, that is if you don't fobble it getting it out of your pocket.:D

The Calypso Jr. is pretty fast for me because I’m used to it. I have other knives that I can get open faster, but I usually fumble them a bit either when pulling them from my pocket or when readjusting my grip after I get the blade open.

The absolute fastest that I have is a cable tie “waved” Endura, I can’t imagine anything appreciably faster, since the blade is locked open as it clears the pocket.

I think I can picture this, but have never seen it. Does the zip tie loop tightly through the Spydie hole and a cut-off tail is the wave device? Does the Endura go tip-up or tip-down?

The fastest current knife would be most any waved Emerson. Although whether or not it's the best knife in general is debatable.

If you're not opposed to redneck engineering, My Wegner and my Axis AFCK with ten cents worth of zip ties through the holes are lightning fast, perhaps quicker to deploy than the Emersons, since you can reliably open them coming straight up, as opposed to having to make a sweep. Bear in mind it works with most any tip down knife that has an opening hole. Had a friend that did it with a couple of Spydie Civilians.

I've also heard that the old Kershaw Talons with a can opener are unbelievably fast.

Fast also was my Protech Runt. My fingers just naturally landed on the button when I was drawing it. Inspite of it's diminutive size, I think the Runt has quite a bit going for it. Just remembering it for a moment makes me want it back!

I've never timed any of them, but I do know that when someone needed something cut all of the above (sans Kershaw, since I've never owned one) were most often deployed before they got beyond "can..." :D

You’re picturing it right. The Endura is tip up (the “Wave” only works with tip up knives).

I actually have two ties side by side on the Endura, the second tie keeps the first one from moving and forms a sort of “Cobra Hood”.

BTW, you should be able to turn up some old threads on cable tie waved Spydercos with a search.

My Benchmade 710 opens-up so quickly (and smoothly) that it scares me....(It's even quicker than most, if not all, of the "automatics" that I've "played-around with"!).

I know what you mean. I used to want an auto, but now I don't. What would be the point? I always wonder if auto's are weak as far as their design and lock up. I'd rather have an Axis. Makes you wonder if they'll make Axis locks illegal, or if they are already illegal in some places. If you like the 710, try handling a 806D2 AFCK sometime. :) I find it's a bit large for me to EDC though.

Though maybe not the fastest out-of-pocket, I always loved the action of the Kershaw Liner-Action line, like the 2420. Do they still make those?

In the pre-Axis days, that was the one to beat. One little push (once broken in) on the stud and KA KA THUNK it exploded out of the handle - made the most satisfying sound too, like racking a Rem 870. Full flat ground was nice too.
