Hey everyone, soo I just found this forum today and i've been wondering for a while now, what kind of folding knife should i buy? I am going to get a CS Recon Scout in SK5 soon and i'm just looking for a general use folding knife. Any recommendations? Something under $100 preferably. Thanks!

Spyderco Paramilitary 1 is heavily discounted now.
Spyderco Endura 4 (comes in a FFG version and a recently-discontinued FFG G10 version)

Look into Kershaws for a ton of different styles at excellent prices.

If Kershaw doesn't float your boat I would look into a Spyderco Manix II.

The Gunny recommends a folder with a blade length of about 6".
I like large folders, but one that size for $100 is gonna be hard to do.
Right off hand your best bet might be CS voyager series.

A 6" blade folder is huge for a EDC, in my opinion. I really like Benchmades AXIS lock knives and you should be able to get a nice one under a hundred. The Griptilian and Bone Collector both come in a large and small size under your $ limit. Also check out Spyderco and Kershaw. The Manic 2, frn ZDP Stretch 2, and new Paramilitary 2 are nice Spydercos and I really like the Kershaw RAM which is around 50 and is a awesome knife even at twice that much.

If you let us know more about what you are looking for in a folder we can narrow a list down.

Benchmade Griptilian (550 or 551) depending on whether you like a thumb stud or a spyderhole opener.

any intended use info?

if you want to keep it well under 100, and depending on use/size requirements, griptilians can be had in the 60s, cs makes the american lawman (a bit bulky) and the recon 1 (big knife), and a buck vantage seem like all good candidates...

I don't know spyderco knives, so i won't recommend one.

you can do anything you need with 3 or 4 in. blade folder length. there's a ton of valid candidates. check out the forum section that has manufactuers & read the performance reports.dennis

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. To narrow it down a bit I want no bigger than 4". I have a rather large hand soo a bigger handle would be nice. It'll be my knife for carrying around. Ya know, just in case. Opening mechanism doesn't matter too much but preferably something that doesn't require both hands. Thanks again for the info, i'm pretty new with folders.

with bigger hands for like 60, look at CS american lawman and recon 1 (i think the recon is a 4inch blade)...

if you want even smoother opening than those CS, griptilian is like 3.4-3.5 blade and like 70 at the right place....

Kershaw/ZT 0350
Spyderco Endura4 or Delica4
Buck Vantage Pro
Benchmade Mini-Grip

Spyderco Mili is great for big hands, at 4 inches, but a little expensive. It would be my choice though.

For below that the Endura4 is great, as well as the Cold Steel suggestions.

For... "just in case", I'd recommend a CRKT M21-14SFG. Pretty big handle, relatively inexpensive, and fun. You can wave it too!

Cold steel RECON 1 for sure :)

Any CS with the tri-ad lock, I'm not one to usually recommend CS but the folders they are putting out now are hard to beat.

The Ontario Rat-1 would be well worth a look. It's as large as I would consider for EDC, tank solid, and inexpensive.

Knife selection is such a personal matter and the choices are so wide that I tend to suggest knives that are great value for the money. Save your serious money for when you know exactly what you want.

The best deal in a decent sized, ie, ~3.5" blade, is the blemished JYDII 1725SG2, a Ti framelock with a great SG2 edge. It's available shipped for <$100 from Kershawguy in the 'For Sale - Dealer - Production' subforum here. That's a fraction of what the production version sold for - it's been gone for some time. A regular D2 edged G10 scaled SS linerlock JYDII 1725CB is no slouch, either - and widely available. They are not assisted - open via a flipper. The blem is cosmetic - the SG2 edges are not symmetrical.

Of course, if you can afford one, a ZT-0301 is hard to beat!

As much as I like the TI JYDII and as good a value that it is, I have to respectfully disagree. The Cold Steel TriAd locks are a better value. They are much tougher knives and more inexpensive.

Tougher and better don't always mean the same thing.
