which folders have been adopted by military

o really? i had heard from a few guys that were being deployed they could take side arms, i think one restriction was something like they could not be brought back.

No you cant bring POWs (personal owned weapons, refers to firearms) on deployments. Its even iffy to bring on post unless there are specific circumstances. In fact, a soldier got arrested a few weeks ago at Ft Benning when a POW was found in his truck on post, when it caught on fire from the forest fire caused by an arty sim.

It's silly to think a soldier trained in multiple weapons and self defense can't have his own weapon on his personal property, but that's the Army.

The Marines would probably pass the hat to buy him a new one, and the change left over to get a vehicle.

With Camillus gone, a fair sized chunk has left the 'service list'.

I don't know exactly the models but the Coast Guard used to issue Leathermans as well as Gerber Gators (which I found interesting). Don't know if they still issue these or not.

USCG doesnt have a general issue according to a friend thats enlisted. if you start doing other stuff they might issue a knife but he said it all depends

Strider has a couple of knives that have NSNs; the SMF and I believe the DB-L. Plus, 1st MSOB just did a large purchase of SnGs.

And BM has NSN's on autos that were "adopted" for the CG - and some Army supply sergeants know how to bump the system and get them.

Honestly I wouldn't put too much into the hype about the military or as far as that goes the military models themselves. Just because uncle Sam has his stamp on it certainly doesn't make it a superior product. The US has huge contracts with so many companies and surely many are based on prices among other things.
If you compare military issue backpacks, sleeping bags and alot of other things (knives included) you will find alot to be mediocre to top of the line manufacturers products.
Since personal preference is really up to individuals I will just say that in my opinion I wouldn't listen to the silly claims of a knife being used by navy SEALs or a special forces watch or flashlight and just do some hard research and by listening to knowledgeable people (such as ones on this board) who give good honest opinions of products they have tested and tried.

P.S. not meant in any way to knock the people in the military.

just remember what one astronaut thought as he was about to take off "This thing was built by the lowest bidder."

just like every other piece of government issue items

LOL, well Im not sure if you are agreeing or arguing with my point. I am certain that NASA has alittle more spending involved in the shuttles than the average foot soldier's canteen. There are ALOT of items much better than military quality as I am looking at several right now. I have used plenty of military items and some better commercial.

moslty just expanding on you post, agreeing with the point that the arent going to splurge on general issue stuff

Yes, funny I used to be so into the militarized items that the thought of a bright yellow or orange item was absurd to me....now as I sit here writing this I just ordered a bright yellow storage item! lol I dont want to look like a Navy Seal hiking in the woods.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on "issued gear".
