which forge?

I kinda get a kick out of building my own tools too. Or rebuilding old ones. I've done that a few times (lathe, large sander, shaper, scroll saw, small belt sander). I've just gotta learn to weld. Anyone wanna recommend starter welding equipment and maybe a link to an online tutorial? Or should I just go take a course at the community center?

Aproy,
I picked up a mig welder from HF about 2 years ago and it has a 2% duty cycle, but it works great! The only downfall is it doesn't last long before hitting the duty cycle. FYI: Duty cycle is the amount of time a welder can be used at max power in a ten minute cycle, i.e. 2% duty cycle is 2 min out of 10 minute cycle. The welder will actually weld for longer than 2 minutes bfore cutting out. The best way to learn is to get a book or watch a video then practice, practice, practice.

You can rent technical videos of all sorts from these guys. It works a lot like netflix.

I realy like your set-up IG, I get time I'm gonna have to build something like it. Rite now I'm using a modified, red neck style, Ron Riel style venturi converted to hair dryer forced air contraption. It works and works well, but is a little too portable for a decent shop set-up. The hair dryer gets masking taped to a T post drove in the ground and taped to the bell of the burnner assembly. The forge body is just a freon tank with the ends torched out and a hole in the side for the burner and linned with insowool. I though about buying a forge when I first built this one but finaly found a place that had ceramic wool and wound up buying a whole rool as they didn't have any reminants. Still got some of the rool left for fixing flux eaten holes and relining. Runs very well and heats to welding heat fast at around 2-4 PSI. Best part of the hair drier blower set-up is two speeds and air going in is hot.:D Bottom line it's very easy to build a propane forge, spend the money on other tools, you'll be glad you did.

Question IG, in your tutorial you have the jet size as 1/8"? I am using 1/16, what's your consumption look like?

For satinite and ITC100 and other stuff I can't recomend Darren Ellis enough, good guy to do buisness with.

For the benefit of our newbie, the pressure figures require knowledge of the orifice size before you can compare them.
