should i get the grissly 2 by 27 inch belt grinder, or the 1by42 inch belt grinder?

If you mean the 2 x 72, I would recommend you get that one if you can afford it.

i cant afford that one. which of those two? can i get belts for the 2 inch one?

I humbly suggest (I am a noob as well) that you wait. Save your money until you can build a NWG from plans or buy a Coote's or other 2x72 solution. I have a Coote's and am very happy with it. I will always keep this grinder. I will hopefully get a KMG/clone or something better in the future. For now I will use the Coote's. You can find a much better selection of belts in this size.

Best of luck!

Before I bought either of those I would buy the 2 X 42" Craftsman from Sear's.Good little grinder and belts are availible from tru-grit.Search this site for it and check it out.

If you can not swing $400+ spend $150 and get the 2x48 Sears Craftsman. Many have purchased this grinder on a limited budget and it works quite well. Much better than the ones you are looking at. You can even get a ceramic platen liner for it to make it even nicer.

I think that im going to get the craftsmen 2 by 42 inch one. I was wondering if the platen can be taken off? like the hf 1by30 in. one. I had thought the craftsmen was discontinued, atleast thats what the sales guy said. now i find it on sears.com. Im going to get that, and probely get 1200 grit 1 inch belts.

The HF 1x30 is a bottom of the line sander. It has NO balls. I use mine for sanding sheaths and sharpen a few thigs but that is it. I paid 430 for mine and that is all it is.
