My usual fixed blade for backpacking purposes is a Cold Steel SRK. I picked it up used on EBay. In my case though I bought from a local seller and was able to inspect it before I paid.

No frills but a good solid sturdy knife.
 
I second the Fallkniven A1, an amazingly good knife for the money. You can get it in a nice Kydex sheath too.
