Which Hi-cap Rifle for Fathers Gift

Thanks for all the input everyone. I'm all excited about the gunshow.

If anyone is going to the show in Gray Tenn this Saturday. (johnson city) say howdy.

why?????

personally, i very very much prefer an AK over a mini, also prefer an AR to the mini, i have had a mini since '79 or so and while i think for the price i paid ($200) its not a bad rifle i would sure think twice (or maybe 3 times?) before i paid anywhere near the MSRP on one now, when ya can get an AK for 1/2 that price and have a better rifle by far to boot.

and while both my AR's are colts there is nothing at all wrong with bushy's,

point being i dont know why anyone would prefer a mini to an AR or AK unless its a legal reason (ie they cant buy an AR or AK by law) i know mine hasnt been outta the safe since i got my AR's and AK's, its simply not as good a rifle, not as reliable, not as ergonomic, not as accurate, imho there is just nothing to like better.

have ya tried an AR or AK??

The gunshow sucked.

If you were looking for relics and pistols it would have been heaven. Only two tables had new rifles anywhere close to what I wanted, and they thought the stuff was made of gold.

Just by chance I stopped in at a local sporting goods store on my way to get some cattle feed.

I picked up a D.P.M.S. Panther for what I thought was a good price. Half of what they were asking at the gunshow.

It looks fairly nice and is very lightweight . I think my Father will be thrilled and will put it in his closet where it will probably stay from now to doomsday. He might pull it out to brag that his Son bought it for him every now and then, and that's all that counts. :)

Might pick one up in a month or so for me to play with. :D

I have to agree that for this application the M-1 Carbine does make a good bit of sense. Good value for the money, fairly inexpensive practice ammo, cheap magazines, small size in house, a folding stock can be added, less of an overpenetration problem through walls, excellent defensive ammo available (CorBon DPX), very low recoil and muzzle flash. It also has the advantage of not looking like a "bad guy gun" for when the cops arrive. Manual of arms is easy and the rifle itself is very simple to care for.

+ 1 on the M1 Carbine.

It is significantly lighter and more compact than a standard AR as well.

You do want hollowpoints or softpoints for defensive use though (if you can't find or afford the CorBon). The FMJ lacks stopping power.

congrats on the purchase! even though my dad qualified expert with an M16 multiple times during his 26 yrs in the army, he is pretty antigun. i just bought my first gun (ruger10/22) and he wont even acoompany me to the range :(
i wish i could buy him a gift like that....
