Which is better for EDC?

Hi, I am new to this fourm and I need advice towards a future purchase. I have just scored a $200 gift card to amazon and want to splurge on a new EDC knife. I currently carry a Spyderco Emerson 4 FFN with VG10 which has served me well. I heard about Zero Tolerance knives and have heard great things regarding their build quality and value. I am looking for something a bit smaller and narrowed it down to 2 choices: ZT 0900 and ZT 0456. I like the size of the 0900 but feel the blade shape is more geared towards slicing whereas the 0456 seem more versatile. Any input and comparisons would be great.

Pretty new to the world of knives and feel you guys would be more of a expert than me. Any info would be great!

You looking for a smaller ZT for EDC check out the 0450/0450CF, 0770 or 0566. All 3.25" blades.

I looked into those options. The 0566 is seems to be a great blade, wary about the speed assist and lesser quality materials, but hey its a ZT. Not a fan of the CF models although I am warming up to them due to the weight..

Of the two you're looking at, I prefer the looks of the 0456. Bear in mind, that knife is almost twice as heavy as your Emerson Endura while over an inch shorter overall. That's a lot of new weight for you to get used to carrying.

You might also consider the ZT0450, 0450CF or the ZT0808.

The 0456 is on my short list. More than likely my next ZT. My current EDC is the 0450cf, and I don't see that changing when I get the 0456.

The 0450cf is amazing light, mine weighs 2.4oz. I point that out because ZT lists it at 2.7oz. It is also blinding fast on deployment. I've carried it in a pocket with keys, change and other objects in my pocket for 2 months and it looks brand new.

I can't recommended it enough.

Good luck with your purchase.

Personally? If I was going to spend the money on a smallish ZT it would be the 0770 hands down. Much better cutting geometry than most of their blades.

the 0900 is on my short list. I love the look of that knife. Then again, the 909 (its big brother) may be my favorite folder.

I EDC a 350. I really like how well a 3.25" blade lends itself for day to day tasks. As a contractor, I prefer a more heavy duty knife for my cutting chores, but any of the ZTs should be more than ready to handle what you throw at them.

is there a big difference between ELMAX, S35VN, and CTS-204P? (now I going off topic)

Can't go wrong with either one - so get the one that smiles back at you when you look at it.

Also, get it from Whitty at USAmadeblade - good folk.

I also agree on the 0909 (the big brother) being my favorite knife. Both choices you have are great but between the 2 I would lean to the 0456.

I just scored a 456, and it is amazing. It is a bit chunky (which I don't mind). But it's hard to go wrong with any of the ZT's.

does the lack of jimping on the blade affect its handling? most of the blades I have usually contain some type of jimping to avoid slippage

If you mean on the 456, I see no need for jimping, and may even make it uncomfortable. The handle is so contoured, that it pretty much just locks my hand in place. I guess it could have had some on the spine, but not necessary and I think it would have detracted from the clean lines. I would hate to see jimping on the frame under the flipper. That would have made flipping uncomfortable on the finger. There is some very light traction on the spacer, but seems more decorative.

I'm not the guy to answer this, they will all open boxes just fine, which sadly is how I use my knifes the most.

And if I hadn't already ordered, that bronze anodizing with blue accents from Whitty's shop looks absolutely sweeeet. It's a must see.....
