Okay, another of the IMPOSSIBLE QUESTIONS:

"Which is BETTER? The 18" or 21" Gelbu Special?" Oh, and as an aside, "WHY?"

Now, check made out to Mrs. Martino in hand, I'll wait until the dust clears, and THEN hope the next Khukuri purchase will assuage my HIKV...

Thanks, my fellow enablers... :o ;) :) :D

P.S. Oooops. Intended purpose- combat blade... Thanks again, CFL ;)

AFAIC the 18" GS is the better of the two. It is usually lighter and consequently more lively in the hand.
The small difference in length also makes it easier to control.
And it is the one that Pala said he would arm all the Ghorkas of today with if it were up to him.

all the gelbus are good for this.
i have 18, 21 and 25 inch gelbus.
all wood handled, all awesome.

I feel that my Kesar 18" Gelbu Special is the most fighter desigened khuk I own. It is fast, light, strong and the perfect length, (for me) as a fighting tool. It finely combines speed, power, and strength in an awesome package.
I miss Kesars work. He did super fullered blades, as did Sanu. Ah life rolls on and new great kamis develop and bring us their style and interpretations on these fine blades! :D

I'm not a martial artist, and I only have one Gelbu; a 21" by Sher. It's light and fast and the balance is wonderful. It doesn't feel like you're swinging around 15" of blade.

If I were to pick a khuk for use solely as a weapon the 21" Gelbu would be it. My Foxy Folly would come in very close second place.

I don't think that you could go wrong with either length of Gelbu Special.

I used to run this issue by a now passed on Forumite Pappy; which would be better for snakes? The 18", or 20"?

The 18" is faster. But Pappy finally said he wanted the extra 2" if it was a poisenious snake.

Hi Munk and All,

It was the last line of Munk's post that got me.

If one is faced by a serious "social difficulty," being able to "reach out and GINSU someone" makes a lot of sense. Whether it be 600 to 1,000 meters, or 18 to 21 inches... That "extra" little bit DOES seem like an important measure of comfort... (That's why I'm 600m and under today- the ex-wife's lawyer plucked me like a chicken. AR instead of M1A1 Supermatch, nowadays... :grumpy: ) Comfort, like distance from an "ex," is important...

I realize that the the 21" GS will be heavier. Just means adding one more thing to my "sea change." Call it a "Service Life Extension Program" for my old carcass. SLEPin' around, trying to get fit again...

My brother has been diagnosed with myoplastic displasia (spelling?) and needs me around for a probable marrow transplant in the next 5 to 7 years... Hrummmmph! I was happily going to Hell in a handbasket at 90 mph, before he dropped this on me...

Offered him all my marrow and blood NOW, so I wouldn't have to get in shape- for me to stay alive until then... Now, no booze, great cigars, or dangerous women... Hell, at my age and state, they're ALL dangerous... :(

So, it's sourdough bread without anything for my carbs, lots of veggies, some meat (very low fat content), lots of fish like salmon, and some fruit... Shucks, add in lots of walking, archery, BoomUndBang marksmanship, waving swords and Khukuris around, and I may even get healthy! And here I was looking forward to a nice, long rest...

So, my friends, if I mumble and shake at watching my blood sugar drop down from 350+, or triglicerides/cholesterol plummet from 1,000+, it's not REALLY me- it's just some guy that has preparation for another job he has to do... Future marrow donor... :)

Now, to get in shape, there's the CAK, the Chitlangi, the GS 21", and what next month? My best swords are from Angus "Gus" Trim... So, until I have at least one each of his, H-I will have to wait... Hmmmm... Gransfors-Bruks- Double Bit Throwing Axe... Yeah, that will be my Yule gift to me... One entire turn, each 20 feet... :D

Well Gentlemen, and any Ladies that drop in, that's my "career" for the next five to seven years... Sounds like fun, doesn't it? When my Brother's mended, I'll need a time machine... With five to seven years to get in shape, and practice with my weapons, I'll need SOMETHING to do...

Anybody want to come along? That's in five to seven years, remember...

Well, "Have Weapons, Will Travel" says, "Take care, stay safe, have fun, and PLEASE don't offer me Cinnamon Apple pie..." ;)

Thanks, Astrodada. A long road ahead, for which I hope my Brother and I both make it... He owes me lots of fine cigars and aged Irish Whisky... Maybe someday, we'll both be able to enjoy them...

Take care, my friend...

If 21" GS is better, consider the law of diminishing returns.

The 25" GS or 25" Malla. Awesome to swing, provided you're 7' tall.

I use 2 hands. :D

The 21" Gelbu was my favorite large khuk. I sold mine (stupidly) and I've been waiting for a wood handle one to shark. I've taken down 6" thick trees in under a minute with a 21" GS. It has the ideal fullering/weight ratio, IMO.

Ad Astra,

Those are BEAUTIFUL Short Swords!!! Uh, which one do you carried concealed? And HOW?

Of the two, which do you like better?

Thanks for the eye candy...

Carter

P.S. Are those special runs of their lines? Or are they commission work? cfl

Both special orders, which I heavily discourage. Long story.

Carry with baldric (shoulder strap) or use steel straps for a belt.

Long live the 25" khuk! Still need a 25" kobra.

I have the 21" GS and find it pretty easy to control. Its more neutrally balanced than my other khukuris. 18" GS vs 21" is sort of like 16.5" WWII vs 18" WWII. If the few extra inches won't be a problem for you to deal with (carrying, storage, etc.), they'll come in handy when dealing with the dregs of society. On the other hand, an 18" GS will likely be considerably longer than anything the average street punk will be wielding.

So in conclusion...got a coin you could flip by chance?

Is that a neem handle on the Gellbu Special?
The 25" GS?

No, not neem. It was unfinished, raw when I got it. I only put Ballistol on it.

Fairly sure its un-rouged Satistaal. Not sure.

I perfer the 18" Gelbu. A really fine, fast, fighting knife. Just the right blend of weight and balance.
