which is better the para military or maxix

I happen to like the Mini Manix better than the ParaMilitary. I like the Para, but I LOVE the Mini-Manix.

Both are very strong knives. It seems that the lock strength of the Para has also been bumped to VHD. Having said that, the Manix (mini or full size) together with the Chinook which is the same construction, is pretty much a superlative in strength, especially since the Lil'T has been discontinued.

Personally, I much prefer the Manix since it fits my hand much better (...than any other knife I have ever held,...but that is besides the point :p ) than the Paramilitary, but I am currently more and more warming up to the Mili. However, Paramili and Manix are quite different knives when you hold them in your hand. A Mili vs. Manix and Mini-manix and Paramili are much more sensible comparisons.

I'd probably go with a Manix for general use simply becasue I think it is a stronger knife. The Para is nice too, but the Manix is more comfortable in my hand.

I have owned a Military, a Manix and a Mini manix. Out of the three I still own the Mini manix the other two have been sold. Guess that tells you what I thought.

The Military I found just to light. It just didn't feel substantial enough compared to the other two which, made me not have 100% confidence in it. That's not to say it's a weak knife by any means. But, in my mind it was:rolleyes: .

The Manix was the opposite, it was just to much overkill for my liking. It was a bloody great lump to tote around in a pocket and eventualy I found myself leaving it at home (No good to anyone there). Other than that I liked it. So decided to try the smaller Mini Manix.

The Mini Manix is just perfect. It's an incredible slicer and seems really strong. I haven't managed to do anything dumb to it yet anyway:cool: . I'd be very surprised if you bought a Mini Manix for an EDC and didn't like it.

Afraid I can't help regarding the Paramilitary. I've never owned or even seen one in the flesh.

All the best,

Tony

I have not handled a Manix yet.I have owned several Militaries,Para-Militaries and a Chinook or two.I like the heft of the Chinook and therefore would probably like the Manix as well but for EDC I found the Chinook too heavy for my taste. On the other hand the Military and Para-Military are great cutters with very little weight, which might translate to chinzy/cheap feel to some end users but not to me.They are light and slice like crazy, not unlike a Samauri sword Vs. a Claymore.Finesse Vs. brute force.YMMV.tom.

The Para and Mini-Manix both fit the hand well...the Para is lighter, yet it is rated MBC. The Manix line is the strongest folding knife on the market. It is a step up for heavier duty usage. Both blades are S30V, have an excellent flat grind, and utilize G10 so it comes down to mainly feel, carry options, and weight. If you dont mind a bit more weight and prefer tip up and/or left handed carry (I never understood why people like tip up), do the Manix as it is 4 way carry and the Para is just tip down, RH (happens to be my style but if I was left handed it wouldnt be).

(I never understood why people like tip up)

Most knives have rounded or radiused butts thereby providing little obstruction to the hand as it slides in and out of the pocket to retrieve money, the car keys, get warm, or for whatever reason when carried tip-up. Not so with tip-down only carry knives in general (Kershaw Leek excluded), because the frontal or tang area of the knife handle is not often rounded and streamlined. Certainly no where near as much as the butt area is. In addition, if the knife is a Spyderco and carry is in the right pocket there is additional obstruction caused by the blade protrusion due to it's width where the hole is.

Depending on one's preference in carrying a knife, the lack of tip-up carry option may be moot (meaningless). To others such as myself, I often (actually far too often) find myself needing to retrieve something from my pocket (usually money). And, in the winter my hands go into the pockets for warmth. I want as little obstruction as possible.

No one carry style is better or worse than another, it's just a matter of preference and, we all have them. And, this is good as it tends to drive more ideas and development as designers try to cater to customer preferences. While some say the blade deployment is a fraction more efficient with tip-up carry (something that I probably agree with), the far more dominant reason for my tip-up carry preference is what I would call "pocket friendliness".

Mini Manix is the stronger knife. Also, note that the Para does not have a forefinger guard. If you're truly using the knife hard, you might want to have a better guard, which points to the Mini Manix.

I have the Para and the Mini. Since I got the Mini I've been carrying it all the time. If you want a Para, it may be better to check one out at a dealer and get it there. There have been a few concerns about Para fit on the forums. Overall the Mini is defintely the stronger knife. Having said that, I'm still happy with the Para, but i would point you towards the Mini if you weren't planning on getting both :)
