One of the Benchmades, if so which one? Microtech? Something else?

Well I'm a huge fan of bowies, I love how each maker and company has a new design for them. I absolutely love what BM did for the 43, so I'm going with the 43 on this one. They are plain edged, how knifes should be(:D) and the satin handles are awesome.

So, my plain jane 43 is my pick.:)

Of all the ones I've looked at the 43 seems to be my favorite as well. Plain of course. :D

That might all change with the model 31. The idea of a smaller bali with a pocket clip rocks!

How about a model 31 with a 43 style blade?

Dennis, you should have posted this as a survey. :)

I still think the BM 45 plain edge is my favorite, but I also like the 43's bowie blade.

I like my BM Model 30 for it's speed. Those short steel handles fly, and my knuckles can testify.

For everyday fun and general aesthetics, I'd go with the BM Model 42. I like this blade stye, it just seems more Bali-song-like.

The BM's are all excellent, but I always had a soft spot for the 42's weehawk blade. Plus, with the trainer released, any combat training philosphies that uses live sparring, will be able to safely carry that training across to all 3 of the 4" models. And BM is the only one with a trainer right now. The 45 mentioned by Rgray is the steel handled versions of the current lineup. Nice, but out of production. As for a BM 33 (31 with a Bowie blade), BM has not historically made a 3" bowie blade. Just utility drop points and tanto's in 3".

The Tachyon is by far the smoothest flipper out there. Blade is a lttle short for my taste, but the engineering behind it is amazing. Unfortunately, it's the most priciest choice.

Which leaves the Monarch. It's a throwback to the BM bali's of old. Heavy milled steel handles. No latchgate. But with the recent production issues taken care of, they are starting to make it out of the shop. For the price, it's a solid workhorse. A no frills, beat it until it's dead, working bali. It's also the only one with a dagger blade currently available.

Tony, did you leave SWAT out on purpose? You seemed to have touched every other major company, but not them.

Just curious.

Not intenionally. I just have a habit of doing things in 3's. You know, the gold, silver, bronze thing.

So in 4th Place (Tie): SWAT Black Tigers. Very light weight, very thin, with the only 5" blade going. Not a duty bali, classified more towards the weapon side of the family. Bit slow to flip, but flips eeriely silent. Recently came out with a limited run of 22 pieces in Red handles.

SWAT Brass Tigers. Everything the same as the Black one, but with the thunk of brass handles. The 5+" of brass makes it a really heavy and high-maintenance bali. Except you gain a lot more speed in the flips, and can easily knock someone out with it closed.

Tony,

You forgot to mention that the 3"ers also had a weehawk blade, not just utility and tanto.

OK, if you want to get technical and believe the sales brochures. But I've mentally hypnotized myself into thinking the Model 30/35's to be a swedged Utility Drop Point, and not part of the Jody Samson Weehawk grind family that should be the only ones to be called a Weehawk... ;)

Well if thats the case then my 45 isn't a true weehawk either, as it has the basically the same size swedge as my 30.

Just as it looks on the 42. Asymmetrical double dagger grind for the first half of the blade, flat spine for the second half. Swedge should be able to be sharpened to a cutting edge, which means the edge of the swedge should be ground fairly thin. Samson custom weehawks have fully sharpened swedges, and not only just the ones he did for PC/BM. Now I wish I remember where I put that stupid Samson custom Weehawk boot knife.

Large hands, large handles. I still have a PC custom with a D2 utility blade. EDC was a BM custom until I was informed they no longer make them. I do like the handles on the customs a lot more than the 40 series. Of the 40 series, my favorite is the 48 for the blade profile. 68 was my all time favorite but no longer have one. Still have a 35 and use it more than any knife I have ever owned. Hope the service department can tune it up a little.
As much as I have tried to adapt to the ti handles, I flip a 42 everyday, I just prefer steel. Like the blade on the 43 a lot more than the 42. Favorite? Has to be the BM Custom Weehawk 4 inch. Wish BM would bring them back.

By the way, where can I see an image of the SWAT Tiger. Forgive my ignorance but I have never heard of them.

SWAT balisong picture (nice, but not my favorite). "Fav" might be my 3" Benchmade custom, which is sort of production, though rare. I won't be flipping my first Tachyon, so I don't know if it's a favorite or not; it certainly is a handsome piece, though. The forty-two might qualify by default since I have four of them (the Oldsmobile collection--442).
