Which Ka Bar?

the D2 Extreme Fighting/Utility knife. I have several full sized Ka Bar fighting knives but the D2 for me has truly been indestructible. It has batoned, opened soup cans, cut all kinds of rope, dug holes, sliced food and then some. I do not know how exactly Ka Bar manufactures this particular D2 steel because the D2 Fighter out of my dozens of knives has been the most difficult to sharpen yet holds its edge like no other knife I have ever seen. The serrated section saws right through anything you want. Penetrating with it is immediate and effortless. Love the no guard on top so you can position your thumb forward.

I have the BK2 as well. While it may indeed deserve the name "trainwrecker" it also just is not going to do any kind of finer tasks well at all no matter how much you sharpen the factory edge. That being said if you go with the BK2 I would pay to have a regrind done to where the edge angle is fine enough for finer tasks yet still thick enough to handle heavy stuff. You would still have a ton of steel left even after a regrind....

No 'regrind' necessary. A thorough resharpening to a true and straight 20° would be good enough. It's the BK2's mass that makes it more difficult for the finer tasks.

Hi I am thinking of buying a Ka-Bar but I don't really know which one.
I want a fixed blade survival knife.
what's your opinion?

There was a time in my life where I would say the one and only would be a BK7. However I have found the BK15 and I have been using it daily since. As a survival knife (the one your going to have with you) the bk15 cant be beat in my opinion. Its light strong has a good sheath that I really like, has a good shape that will skin, carve and pierce. The blade is thick enough to handle light batoning although its not what its designed for and will eat a baton up. The BK15 has replaced knives two to three times its cost. I never thought I would find a knife that I like more than my BRKT Aurora but I like the Kabar Becker 15 better for a 3rd of the cost.
