I'm not sure where to post this one as it "could" fit in various forums. I have been a practitioner of Silat for many years and have seen many different Karambits come out. Just do an "Ebay" search and you will see many makes and models pop up varying greatly in price. Do you guys have any feed back on the ones out on the general market? Thanks.

Well, for Silat, I would make sure that there was a trainer available. That limits it to Tarani's (fixed and folder) and Emerson's. Having fairly big hands, I like Steve's, but Ernie's has the Wave. I understand that Ray dionaldo has one either in the works or on the shelf, but I haven't handled on e yet.

I recently got a smith and wesson karambit I like a lot. It's blade does not the very hooked shape of most blades, but it is enough. The blade is easier to sharpen than some i.e. Emerson.
I also have a cold steel, but don't like it because it is all metal and hard to hold. The s&w cost about $40.

I was concerned about the smith and wesson not handling properly etc. I guess I was just skeptical since it is such an affordable knife. Is it worth getting? There is a new model out now that has a blade shape closer to the ones found on the Tarani and Emerson models.

Rich Derespina makes a wicked, affordable kerambit.

agreed, and I believe he is coming out with a new basic model in April that is supposed to be around the $100 price point, or so the rummor goes. I will let him chime in on it though.

or for an affordable folder you could go with the spyderco.

LOTR?!!! :D ;) Just kidding. Yes, I will have a Karambit coming out hopefully by beginning of April. Right now I am looking at somewhere between $85. - $100. but closer to $85. It will be very nicely done I must say and with custom Kydex sheath too! Anyway, as for the custom Karambit market, I still do those as well and more often nowadays. You can see some new ones here available now: http://www.tadgear.com/edged tools/custom knives/richard_derespina.htm

and also here: http://www.knives.cx/CustomKnives/derespina-richard/index.php

They are a litle adventurous but, it's hard to stay ahead in this business with so many fine makers out there so you have to do things to set yourself apart. As well, as a practitioner of the Karambit and not just a maker, EVERYTHING on my knives has a use. That although the design seems outlandish on some of them, all the points, angles, cutting surfaces are exact and VERY useful in combat. Guaranteed to take apart the opponent that comes into contact with them. Also, they are built for use and not as wall art;)

Anyone interested in a custom or in the production Karambit model 10, email me and let me know, I can add you to my mailing list and alert you to their arrival. Thanks BladeGoblin for the kind words!

since it's not the most practical knife I cant see paying for an Emerson though i'd love to have one.

i've been looking at the S&W folding Kerambit. 26 bucks too.

Salutations!

I have the S&W model Karambit. For the $ is ok. The liner lock is crappy and will dissengage if you put pressure on the spine. The handles are ok but don't feel all too solid. The blade is rather thin and the edge and point are not very sharp and the metal is probably 420 (it only reads "Surgical Steel"). But, if you are just curious (as I was once), get it and try it out. If you like it, move up to an Emmerson, they're one of the best production Karambits. If you don't, it wont hurt your pocket much. Derespina, I can't wait to give your blades a "twirl".

TrentKTS,thanks! my Kris is D2 but I can certainly make karambit in D2 as well. I like D2 alot actually. That Model 8 in my hand is the best fitting karambit I have ever felt or made. Not to toot my own horn, but the ergonomics are really good on that one. It fits just right, the blade is just right and just the right size too.

whitedragon_48, thanks! Check me out anytime:thumbup:

Check out http://www.blackbeltacademies.com/ Mark Davies excellent! martial arts site for a pic of the New Model 10 prototype. This was just a sample but the handle is slightly too long and it will be a bit shorter and comfortable with a slightly increased palm swell. There will be a divot in the handle for grip changes as well. :D

Rich, will this new Model 10 be double-edged? I like a great number of your existing designs, but cannot carry them. Double edges equate to daggers here, which are a no-no.

I have the S&W Karambit in the camo. It is has a framelock, which is very strong, and has no blade play. It is a lot better than what most people say about S&W knives...

BUT, I only got it because I wanted a Karambit for my collection, but am not actually a Karambit fan, so I didn't want to spend a lot and didn't mind if the steel sucked.

If you are serious about it, the S&W really isn't for you. However, I might suggest it as a cheap beater for you to use since you like Karambits while your Emerson (or whatever you get) is strictly for SD.

eojk, it will come single edge. I might offer double edge as an option but am not sure just yet of that. So, it will be legal in most places..

Why don't you check out the 'War Boar' over in the Busse forum in the Manuf's section? Just for S&G if nothing else.

Jerry just posted this and looks interesting, even though I'm not interested in Kerambits.
