Hello every one, I think I've got HIKV. Last week I got a 15" AK from Uncle Bill and today I got a 12". Now I'm looking at getting something Bigger for heavy chopping and splitting. What would you recommend I save my money for?

I'm already saving up for an M43, Do you think that will do a good job at heavy chopping/splitting or should I also save for something like a 20" AK or a Ganga Ram or what?

Any help would be greatly apresiated.

Heber Ellsworth

PS Is there no cure for the HIKV? My mom is going to have kittens when she finds out how many Khukuris I am getting.

Heber:

The closest thing to a sane answer to your "which one next" question is "this one, and this one, no, that one over there, and, and...." Sorry - that's the virus talking.

Be careful with your mom - moms can cure the virus (ask AC) and it can be painful. Talk to her reasonably, and maybe she will opt for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation doesn't work, but it can help keep moms calm :D

wildmanh,

For splitting and chopping wood you can't go wrong with either the full sized GRS or 20" AK. Both are massive khukuris that can handle anything you throw at them. With that said I have to second Uncle's recommendation. I find the Ganga Ram design more graceful and elegant than the AKs. Plus you already have an AK.

I would stay away from the M43 for splitting and chopping wood though. I think Terry's model came in at 1/4" and the kamis are more than likely gonna stick to those specs. At that thickness it won't have the mass to be a great chopper and will probably bind in wood during splitting tasks. I would still get it though. It looks to be a great knife and it's on my wish list.

Uncle Bill, What are the dimentions on the Ganga Ram Specials?

Walosi, The Virus has bee talking to me like that. But, I'm trying to control my self. Ha ha ha ha! Yeh Right! All my spare money this month is going to Khukuris.

With my mom, Rehabilitation won't work or even help. She know's me to well, I'm already a certifiable knife nut.

I didn't know that the Virus hits this hard this fast. Here I was just Visiting the Forum and Uncle Bill posts the Blems and I get all shaky, had to run down stairs, raid my cach of money and pray that I had enough. Then run back up stairs shaking and hoping that some one didn't beat me to that 12" AK. As soon as I got the email from Uncle Bill saying it was mine, the shaking almost stopped.

I am saving for a GRS myself. :)

Take my warning, Don't talk to mom!!! The only way to get out of the "Why do you collect knives?" question is with the reply "Mom, why do you collect ear rings?"

Just smile and nod when the question comes up about "What happens to all your money?"

:D :D :D

Thanks every body for the recommendations and helpfull advise. Looks like I'll probably save up for a GRS and M43.

Uncle Bill, next month I should be moving out into a College Dorm. The college provides me with a PO Box. Have you ever shipped to those and if so, ever had any problems? - If I have my next Khukuri's shipped to school, my mom never has to know about them. :D

Thanks again,

Heber Ellsworth

Wildmanh, You've definetly got HIKV. Not much you can do about it yet. I heard here at Johns Hopkins hospital they have started research on a cure, but all thats happening is the test subjects are hooked. It doesn't look very hopeful. But I thought of what to do about your Mom. Buy here a cute little Kagas Katne Khukuri, they'er only $15.00, maybe you can get her infected.

Wildmanh, for both splitting I would go with the 20" Ang Khola. The GRS is more gracefull and acheives the same chopping performance with less weight. The fast expansion and thick blade of the Ang Khola make it a much better splitter. Splitting with a GRS can be a frustrating experience as it will often get stuck. Not so with the Ang Khola.

From what I read in the other forums most univerisity dorms do not allow knives. You might want to keep a low profile.

Just a word of advice, be careful what you ship to, or more important get caught with around a dorm. A friend of mine got thrown out of campus housing for a Swiss Army and fillet knife in his fishing kit. Meanwhile, his room mate had a drawer full of narcotics and never got in trouble.
As far as the virus, learn to fast talk, there is no help for it.

There were several threads in the Knife Laws forum, about a Kalifornia student who lost his housing _and_ a semester. The knife he was arrested for carrying was legal both by state law and by campus policy, but "someone" turned him in, and the campus police over-reacted. The judge threw the case out, and last I saw on the thread, he was building a large lawsuit. His record would have carried a felony arrest if it hadn't been for the judge's action.

I'd hate to think that any university in Utah had gone that far to the dark side, but even the dorm rules from my time were strict, if not restrictive. We were allowed "hunting rifles and shotguns" but no handguns. Ammunition had to be stored at the ROTC office, or off campus. Check the rules out very thoroughly, and don't break them - the result can last a long, long time.

I just found the rules for my new dorm here is a clip of things you can't have: "Swords, Fire Arms, Ammunition Explosives, weapons hunting bows" I guess My Khukuri's fall in the "weapons" catagory so I'll just have stuff still sent home to my mom's place.

My mom's B-Day is this Saturday. Will do something really nice for her so hopefully she won't have kittens when my 12" AK comes.

BTW: what is a Kagas Katne Khukuri?

:
Heber what Will told you is right on.:D
The AK is a mighty khukuri as you alrewady know from getting a 15", increase that exponentially and you can figure what a 20"AK will look like.
And yet the Ganga Ram Special or the GRS as it's fondly known as here is as has been mentioned a lot more graceful and thinner blade, if you can call 9/16" or 5/8" thin.:) The GRS is better at felling trees though. Just depends on what you want to do with it.

The kagas katne is a very small letter opener size khukuri complete with a tiny cho. Any knife without the cho is Not a Khukuri!!!!:)
However it's made from steel and they're hardebed nicely just like the bigger ones and will take one helluva an edge!!!!!!!
They make great little carving knives.:D

And listen to your mom as much as possible, it's always best not to get into to much trouble with her.:) I know it's difficult being a knife knut with HIKV, but.......:D

Wild,
Please, there "is no virus",it's a term invented by a "master" deciever named Rusty,he has a group of sick followers (haven't given the group a name yet but I'm working on it)!His chief followers are THAT NDN,Koz,Blues, wal(this is a real sicko,he even got his son AC into the hikv cult),billpaxton & a "few" others! My research shows that the next K for you to get is a baby GRS,even your MOM will like this!
jim

I think I'll lean towards getting a GRS. But can't deside on a size yet. What do people think, the 18" or the 22"? I'm mostly going to use it to cut fire wood on campouts and hiking trips and maybe fell a few trees. Will carry it on my Military belt. Also, can you get it with the Chiruwa style handle?

Hey Jim, if there is no such thing as the HIVK then how come I get all shaky when ever Uncle Bill posts the UBDOTD and I'm waiting to see if I get it?

- Yvsa, the Kagas katne khukuri sure is cute. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I think I'll get one when I have a few extra bucks.

Wildmanh, if you plan on carrying this next khuk on your person for fairly long stretches of time, you might want the 18" GRS. Its lighter but a great chopper.
