Which knife for a gift?

He probably won't sharpen well himself, so it would be better if it stayed sharp longer.

I was about to suggest a GEC #66 serpentine jack, but something occurred to me. If he's not likely to be the kind of guy to sharpen a knife himself, is he the kind of guy who'd be up to the task of maintaining carbon steel? Could he, or would he want to?

If he doesn't mind maintaining the carbon blades. Then I suggest maybe one of GEC'S new to come out clip point Barlow/boys knife.

Huckleberry boys knife if its a boy or Indian girl canoe if its a girl.
Get the name and birth date engraved on the blade . Llike the one in the other thread . I thought that was pretty good.

Huh--that's a pretty sweet idea. I'll go check out the Indian girl canoe...

Is the knife gift a surprise? or will you give it to him on some special occasion? cause I'd follow Pinnah's thoughts, and do it this way.
Invite him at your place, offer you a drink, tell him that you wish to gift him a knife, and them open some vendor's page (like http://www.collectorknives.net, just to make an example, and name a BF dealer) and let him choose it with you. A gift certificate is a good idea, but choosing it together might make it more special. Same goes for sharpening devices, of course (help him choose, and teach him a bit).

I'm loving the little Indian girl idea, since they are having a girl. They look useful, small enough to have in a pocket on a daily basis, and like something he would like. Thanks for the great suggestions!

Cheers,
Daniel
