Which knife for SD? Spyderco Military or Endura

Hi,

I'm looking for a knife, which I can use for SD? The Military or the Endura are my choices, in Spyderedge. Which would you recommend for SD?

Another question regarding the Military. I've heard that the blade of linerlocks can open accidentially in the pocket. Did it happen to someone?

Thanks,
Thomas

Either are suitable.

Myself though I like the Endura for tip up carry.

If you are on a budget, get the Endura. If paying more isn't a concern, get the Military.

I have 2 Militarys and 2 Enduras. For SD or utility purposes, I always reach for the Military. The handle of the Military is more comfortable and grippy than the Endura's. The Militarys blade is S30V; great steel. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the VG-10 used in the Endura however, I find it easier to get a scary sharp edge on S30V. I have never had any problem with the Military opening in my pocket, or any lock related issues.

If I were you, I would get a PE model instead of the SE. I have found that a PE out cuts a SE on most materials.

Get the Military. It is faster to deploy.

One caveat though. I have one, and the problem you described has happened to me. I sat down in my car one day and right when I was about to buckle my seat belt, I noticed something on my pants. When I took a closer look, I noticed that it wasn't on my pants, but rather was poking through them. The blade had partially opened and the tip had poked right through.

I should have foreseen this happening. I had noticed earlier that my Military was a little too easy to open. So after that little incident, I tightened the pivot. Problem solved. I can't open it as effortlessly as before, but it is still easier to open than my Endura.

if you're getting a spyderco STRICTLY for sd,
i suggest the civilian.

but you've probably thought about that,
so between the military and endura
i don't think you can go wrong either way.

For SD I throw my knife away, jail kills too. But do go ahead and buy the knife you like and carry it for non SD purposes. For SD get some pepper spray and a Surefire, that way you can walk away with no one hurt and no laws broken.

The fact that you posted here on the best knife for SD can be used against you in a court of law if you should ever use a knife on someone. The main point is that if you use too much force to protect yourself, you broke the law in a lot of courts, and a knife is just too sharp not to do a lot of damage. Blood freaks people out and it is people who decide in court.

A knife is just like any other potential weapon; it can be used in a justifiable case of SD or it can be abused. If you use an overabundance of force using ANY weapon, you may have some legal issues to deal with.

You can have the same legal problems by using pepperspray against someone if you are hasty in your decison. It's not the weapon, (assuming that it's legal) it's how you use it and under what circumstances.

Stabbing a guy because he pushed you is a bit extreme. Stabbing the same guy after he attempts to repeatedly shoot you is completely different.

I wouldn't limit my choices of SD tools simply because I was worried about hurting someone. The goal is to stop the attack using a reasonable amount of force. I trust myself to gauge the level of threat and respond appropriately; be that with a gun or knife.

Knowing how to respond to an attack in a reasonable and legal manner is the responsibility of everyone who carries a weapon.

They both will work for SD if you absolutely had to use a knife.

But I would recommend the Endura for several reasons:

It's cheaper to replace if it gets broken or confiscated or encrusted with HIV infected blood.
I personally prefer lockbacks to liner-locks.
A knife with the word "Military" might sound rather bad in a courtroom if you ever did have to go to trial--unless you are actually in the military.

Good luck,
Allen.

I don't know enough about the knives mentioned to recommend one or the other.

Great thread though!

My comment is on the whole Self Defense issue. I have to echo the wisdom from others in this forum. A knife is not the greatest SD weapon. Pepper spray is alot faster, has a little range, and is loved by grandmas and super models alike. The point being, it is effective, and gives a great post-incident preception of your intent. And preception is king in court.

As a soldier, I carry a carbine and a knife. When winning the hearts and minds of a occupied population, your better off shooting someone that cutting them. It's less risky, plays better in the press, and is just more socially acceptable.

I've never seen a CNN story like "US soldiers slashed and stabbed 10 aleged insurgents today"

military.

civilian is the worst idea for SD. sure it might **** someone up... if you were in Rambo IV. If you actually have to pull a knife for SD, expect to end up in court to defend yourself. And regardless of the jury or judge, if a spydie civilian shows up as exhibit A, you're pretty much screwed.

Doesn't have to be a big knife when it comes to SD. Having said that doesn't mean bigger is not better.

My SD blade is a PE Ladybug. It's light and small and u can bring it with u all the time. Just try to hold it between your index and middle finger and make a fist. It's a claw.

Unless it's definitely necessary to confront anyone with a knife (knock the wood), my favourite SD tool is always a nice pair of Nike so I can run faster and better. Yup.

number 1 SD tool: good pair of shoes.

number 2 SD tool: hands/feel/elbows/knees

number 3 SD tool: spydie karambit

you don't want to resort to a weapon for SD. learn some SD techniques instead. even if a guy twice your size jumps you and tries to kill you with his hands, the second you pull a weapon you will get screwed in a court of law.

although I'm not a lawyer, the law generally holds that you have a right to self defense, but only in equal measure of the threat against you. If someone tries to punch you in the face, you can punch them back to stop them - not stab them. If they are taking after you with an axe or bowie knife or something, you have a reasonable fear of your life such that to stop it you can employ deadly force. You are required to somehow know the instant that the threat is over, so if you do stab the would be axe murderer once and he drops the axe and falls over, you can't do anything else. If you do some Kali move and create three holes real fast in the guy... they might hang you for those two other holes.

That being said, the best weapon is your brain. Try not lurking in Las Vegas back alleys at night, for instance.

If you do make a personal decision to carry a knife for self defense, read the local laws very thoroughly!

And finally - get something with a front guard, in my opinion. If you have a design like the Military and you do stab said axe murderer and you hit bone... you are going to slide right up that thing onto the blade. I have one, and its a great utility knife... but I don't think its designed well as a weapon. Just theoretically, of course. I do not advocate or advise violence in any fashion and would prefer all our good citizens to avoid any armed encounters!

the Military, but i'm not going to explain why, because "I have the right to remain silent, and should I give up that right everything I say can be used against me in court"...... :barf:

awareness, flashlight, baton, run, knife...

The millie has a better handle, as far as grip retention and size go. And the 4oz won't kill you when you run like hell for a km or so.

well, since we're bouncing around ideas of "other" knives to choose....

Spyderco Scorpius. don't sweat the SS handles, the shape of this thing forces it to stay put, even in bad conditions. great grip, impact device on the butt end (when the knife is closed or open), and a great SD tip.

"do it.....hey, do it."
