Which knife for SD? Spyderco Military or Endura

I don't have a Military but I have two Enduras and have carried one or the other for 10 years. The Endura is good enough. The Military is probably a better knife but skill is a more important factor in defensive use.

There is one case, discussed here and on Self Defense Forums (the Pring-Wilson case) , where a guy used a Military and the prosecution made a big deal about the name and quality of the knife. "Endura" is a neutral name. "Paramilitary" is probably worse than "Military."

As I've discussed in other threads, Awareness is the most important survival skill. I don't think running is always a good idea. Chances are that attackers who are a big enough threat to make you draw a knife will not be out of shape. What if the attackers are in their teens and twenties and you are not as fast as they are? What if you have your wife and kids with you? People have been stabbed or shot in the back because they ran. Running isn't always a bad idea, but in some of these forums people seem to think it is the answer to all attacks. Running will be more effective if you distract (ex. shine a surefire into his face) , spray, or hurt the guy first.

A knife should only be used if you are justified in shooting the attacker. Those who have not taken a combat pistol or CCW class should do so. The instructor will teach you the actual laws in your state regarding the justified use of deadly force. It will be worth the price even if you decide for some reason not to carry a gun. Don't trust something as important as your life or freedom to what you read on a forum or an urban legend. Martial arts schools are often poor sources for legal knowlege. If you do more than the law allows you can go to prison but if you do less than what is necessary you can die.

I don't use knives for SD. I just like them and I like to use them as tools for camping or cutting boxes and wood. In an emergency situation I'd like to have a knife. Not for SD but just for say killing fish to eat and carving wood into kindling etc. I'm not real big on using a gun or knife for SD. I'm not against them at all it's just not my thing. It's worked out for me pretty good that way. :)

benjamin: thats part of the reason that running is step 4 of 5. I'm in decent shape. Warmup at the physio gym is 7mile on the bike in 20min.

I jog 3/4 of the year(quit in october for winter, be going again in a week or so), and can go for a couple hours... or I can run flat out for 6-7 blocks at full sprint.

If they're in good enough shape to pace me for that, then I'll have to turn and fight. I've only had to fight after 8 blocks once, and thats when I ran into a second group that figured 10-1 was good odds. Still only used the baton to create an opening.

I'm not saying running can't work, but that there are risks involved, even if you are fast. The biggest one is turning your back to attacker. Hitting him first and running past him would be a better option. If you are in Condition Yellow (as discussed in a few infamous threads in Practical Tactical :D ) you might notice the threat before it is too close, and that would be the time to escape. I prefer to evade, putting obsticals between me and the attacker and try to misdirrect him. In real life I've only had to evade in my car, but the attackers were also in vehicles. Awareness should also keep you away from dangerous places.

The problem with having options listed in a linear sequence is that some people will think that you have to complete each step before moving on to the next one. Sometimes you can get away with verbal redirection. Sometimes the only thing you have time for is to shoot. Every situation is different.

shooot? are you kidding me? are you a LEO or just some office IT guy who thinks he lives in the matrix

You shouldn't run unless you're pretty sure you can get away. If you can't get away, better to face your opponent and fight than to give him your back.

No, just someone who lives in a state where LEOs aren't the only ones who can legally carry. You might want to check out www.selfdefenseforums.com .

As for you movie reference, actually I'm in the minority that HATED "The Matrix."

It is NEVER justified to shoot someone unless they draw a gun on you first.

And pardon my skepticism, but i don't think you get glocks pulled on you on a daily basis.

carrying a gun in case you get into a bar fight is just stupid

life isn't like the punisher; you can't just go shoot people.

When did I say anything like that? Did I ever say that you are justified in shooting someone for no reason or that I have firearms pulled on me? Read what I actually wrote on the justified use of force. You are wrong about needing to let someone draw a gun on you. If an attacker has the ability, intent, and means to kill or seriously injure you or another innocent person, you are justified in using deadly force. If someone is attacking you with a knife, bat, club, etc you can still shoot. You can even shoot an unarmed thug in some situations, such as if you see someone trying to rape someone else. The laws are different in every state. Know your own state laws, and don't rely on movies, urban legends, forums, or "common knowlege."

As for barfights, you generally can't bring firearms into bars, and why would I want to get into a barfight? You need to get away from the movies and into Self Defense Forums. Ken Cook has a very good post on avoiding bar fights, just use the search function to find it.

Wrong. There is no law stating that someone must draw a GUN on you before you can shoot them. There are other justified reasons to shoot someone besides the fact that they have a gun.

Carrying a gun into a bar is a crime in every state I can think of.

You clearly don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. Your statement is based on your ignorance of guns and the personal responsbility that comes along with carrying one.

Really? I forgot, everyone that carries a gun has this "Punisher" mentality.
