Which Knife is best?

i would go with the benchmade mini grip for sure but dont get it directly
from benchmade.

For your intended purposes consider getting TWO knives. One fixed blade for camping/ hiking and a good pocket knife. You can do this for under $75.00.

Just one combo-- SOG Field Pup and Kabar dozier. 40.-- + 20.-- $60.--
I have both and they work well. Many other nice combinations out there and you get two knives that you probably can sharpen!

There are many quality knives out for any budget. I love PE BTW no more combo's for me.

Just forget about the Gerber we had them at the store and there is no way they compare to the BM and Kershaw.

spyderco delica for all around usefulness good value and nothing that makes people scared when you whip it out to cut some cheese

I would pass on the Junk Yard Dog due to its gimicky handle.

What exactly is "gimicky" about the JYD's handle?

Thanks for all your help guys. Any other recommendations in my price range?

Definitely check out the Kershaw RAM that somebody else suggested. I own quite a few knives and it is my favourite by quite a large margin.

#2 on that list would probably be my JunkYard Dog II, so out of your 3 choices that gets my vote. Also be sure to check out the Composite version, it's stretching your budget to the max but it's so awesome! :D

I'd also suggest (as almost everybody else did) to get a plain edge blade and also to avoid the tanto tip. Again, it's totally up to you, but the only knife I have that I regret buying is both a combo edge and tanto tip :grumpy:

Hi Dekz, When I think of the JYD I see the original version with the faux riveted metal look:

For a field knife I like a simpler more symmetrical handle design. When I am gutting an animal I spend a lot of time using the knife inverted with the edge pointed up. Fancy finger scallops and canted angles on the handle butt get in the way. It's often hard to find a knife without some forward tilting cant to the handle, but it helps if the blade is closer to a semi skinner back swept design to offset that:

Oh ok, in that context I understand what you're saying. I was just a bit put off because in your standard sabre grip, the JYDII is extremely comfortable.

I'd go with a fullsize Benchmade Griptilian PE out of those choices. I am not a fan of even the most expensive Gerber knives, the quality is just not there. I would also look at the Spyderco Endura or Delica. They are both great knives. If your not particular about steel quality I'd also look at the Spyderco Tenacious or Benchmade Vex which are both made in China.

Heres what I would go with for under $75:

1. Benchmade Griptilian (full size)
2. Spyderco Endura
3. Kershaw Leek
4. Kershaw Cyclone (full size)
5. Spyderco Native
6. Spyderco Tenacious
7. Benchmade Vex
