Which knife is less intimidating for work.

The 943 is very weapon-y to stupid people. Unfortunately, many knives to look very intimidating to the stupid. Your best bet is to go with vibrant handle colors (or do something like a Venom Green RAT 1). The blade shape doesn't matter much except for tanto blades, it all falls down to colors. Sad but mostly true.

Why do you need to be so rude? If you want make sweeping derogatory generalisations take it to W&C. Respect works both ways, as does arrogance.

Story-telling can blunt the edge, so to speak. Tell people you once struggled to pull someone out of a car crash, but the seatbelt was jammed. He died before the police arrived. Ever since, you carry a knife as a rescue tool. Orange or Yellow scales will help in that regard.

I think the Griptilian is the better choice. It looks less "tactical".

I'm sick and tired of political correctness, and I've stopped caring about it. The only folders I won't carry at work are beastly XL folders. If anyone has a problem with it, I'll explain that it's a cutting tool. If they persist, I tell them to shove off because I'mthe one safely carrying his knife in his pocket while they leave full size kitchen knives around the lunch room.

I carried my M16-04Z big dog at work (I was the IT manager for an online bookseller) and I pulled it out to cut a box open and the owner of the company was in my office. He commented on how big the knife was, and then asked why I needed to carry such a big knife with me. I told him that it lasts longer than the little box cutters that the warehouse guys carried. Also I use it to cut cable. He didn't say anything after that.

The Grip is a great knife, and doesn't look very intimidating with a sheepsfoot blade and an orange handle. You can get a custom Grip from Benchmade's site.

Griptillian...or just tell the sheeple to shove it. :p

If you are doing your job, most people won't care what your cutting tool is. I have carried a large fixed blade at work and never gotten so much as a dirty look while poking around people's yards.

What this guy said. As long as it's legal to carry, who gives a shit what other people think.

i always figured gerber's LST - Drop Point, Fine Edge
to be a low keyed enough to go unnoticed.

but i figure anything in pink won't trigger off the alarms...
so perhaps that's one way to disarm the unwarranted attention.

Of your two choices, the orange Griptilian is IMO less intimidating than the 943. Even though the 943 is slender and relatively small, the black handle and pointy blade make it appear more "weaponized" than the alternative. (Someone mentioned the 940 as an alternative to the 943; I second that recommendation if you're attracted to the general design--plus it's a great knife.)

My work EDC lately (I work in a law office) has been a Benchmade-customized mini Griptilian with a white handle, uncoated blade, and silver "split arrow" clip. On the plus side, it looks very non-threatening (I don't think most people can even tell what it is when it's clipped to the inside of my pocket) and is also very functional for a small knife; on the minus side, the custom Grips are expensive and the mini is just too small for some people.

Fudge em. I'm getting a satin blade paramilitary 2 and gonna rig up a deep carry pocket clip. Maybe even go digi camo. I gotta have it. I don't like the tan/brown color.

Coincidentally, today at work I spotted a contractor who works permanently onsite and he had a big ol' spyderco hangin out his back pocket. The utilitarian look of the spyder hole helped it seem like a tool. Not sure if the digi camo will be a little too much (it will be :/). I know my black bladed adamas is. Hopefully I can squeeze in the purchase of the orange griptilian also. ...for when I realize that digi cam wont fly at work.

This is about the tenth time in a row that I have made a knife purchase that was supposed to be for a friendlier blade intended for work and what I actually purchased was bigger or scarier than my current work EDC

There really just aren't many 3" or less high quality knives that can take abuse, not be a gentleman folder, and have a decent handle size. Really all I know of is the Barrage, leek G-10/S30V, Strider PT??, and a few Spydercos (but I cant find a spyderco I like besides the para). I have to want it to buy it.

if you want a benchmade, you could look at the triage, in orange. has the strap cutter, could be useful for your work, you could even sharpen it to a point for hooking boxes. and it looks more like a tool with the cutter. just an idea.

The pointier and thinner it is, the more "intimidating" it is in the eyes of the common Joe. How about a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman? Cheap around 20-30 dollars, decent steel for the job, all stainless steel construction, and 4.5 inch blade, more than enough for most jobs.

I posted this on another thread, but same thing:

For the price it is, you can beat this bad boy up with no worries at all

The Spyderco Caly 3 Carbon Fiber is my favorite little Spyderco folder. It looks and works great with a 3" long blade steel of Laminated ZDP-189 / 420J2 that's 0.125" thick. It weighs just 3 ounces with those CF scales that actually give it a fairly good grip. Serious knife that looks so cool and unintimidating.

If it's too small there's always Caly 3.5 Carbon Fiber.

I just don't care if people are freaked out by the aesthetics of a tool.

It's what you do with the tool that matters.

Most people wouldn't see a ball peen hammer as a weapon, but they are a favorite bikers for this exact reason.

I just carry a legal length blade of my choosing. If people freak about it, that's their problem not mine.
