Which knife should I buy first? (first purchase)

General,
no, you're not bullying me into a Ka-Bar, infact I had my eye on one before you mentioned them. I appreciate you pointing out the D2 steel, I had no idea. I will put that one on my list. Thanks for the link!

Gary

To be honest, I don't really like the standard black plastic handle look.

So far I like the Microtech LCC, and the Buck 110's, 112's (wood and brass look), and the Gerber AR3.00.

I concur with those who suggested a Spyderco Native with FRN handle. Why, you ask?

I believe you should get a folder first. They are easy to conceal, and are much more fun to handle for a newbie knife nut. The Spyderco Native comes with an attractive patterned FRN handle, which differs from most boring-non-decorated-no-personality FRN or G-10 handles out there. It comes with a Spyderhole, which is the best and most fun opening system available (you can do simple openings, snap openings, or drop openings!). It comes with a premium/expensive steel at a ridiculously low price, not found in any other knife, and will thus help you in learning about and appreciating finer steel. It is constructed by a company with excellent attention to service and quality, whose products have a "personality" and "uniqueness" unmatched by any other production knife company. It has a conservative 3 1/8" blade, which is not too large and not too small, plus its spear-point shape is very versatile for almost any task. There are a gazillion other reasons...

...and as opposed to The General, I AM pressuring you to get this knife. GET IT, NOW!!! Any other purchase would be downright foolish and scandalous.

Write down the names off the top 20 most wanted knives that you can afford. Next cut the names out and put 'em in a hat. Close your eyes and pick. Just be happy with the fact that later on you'll be getting another.

If you're looking for an affordable dependable every day work knife I would seriously consider the Spyderco Delica and Endura. The Delica has a 3" blade good for everyday carry and the Endura is larger with a 4" blade.

I have had a lot of experience with these knives and I've found that these are great folders for the price. I have seriously used these knives for a variety of tasks.

In any case I hope you find what you're looking for.

Sincerely,

Islander

Yeah, I know- same old song and dance, but for the money it's REALLY hard to beat a M/A LCC.

Sure- you could spend less and still get a nice knife- but if you really want to get serious high quality, the LCC may as well be a custom in terms of feel. Same could be said about the SERE, but I just can't get into the spearpoint blade- and there's SO much black G-10- ugh

Buy what you want to. Eventually you'll figure it out for yourself anyway. We all have different tastes, needs, budgets, etc.

Enjot yourself looking though, that's half the fun!

Gary,

If it's the LCC you want, get one NOW with the Ti bolsters before they're gone.

Otherwise, I suggest the following:

Lg. Folder - Spyderco Wegner
Sm. Folder - Spyderco Wegner Jr, Native, or
Delica; OR William Henry
Evolution
Heavy Duty Militaristic Fixed Blade - Fallkniven A-1

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

Gary,
Sell everything you own and get them all. You are bitten by the bug my freind. This is the point of no return... You are now doomed to a life of questing for "The Perfect Knife". It is a long, expensive and trying journey. Your family, friends and coworkers will think you have lost your mind. You will be a pariah, an outcast from an unsympathetic and misunderstanding world. Know that you are not alone and this is the place to come to commune with those who understand.

Go for the LCC then!

You will LOVE IT!

Or the KA BAR

Have a good one!
Do what feels right! Right now!

Buy the best you can afford.

A good place to start is a Spyderco folder, either the Endura or Delica. They are plain, easy to open and they won't cost a fortune.

Next you can get another good folder at a good price to keep the other one company before you start splashing out or saving up for the more expensive stuff. In this category I recommend CRKT, either the Kasper Fighting Folder, M16 or Point Guard.

Then you save up some $$ for something smart and special, either Benchmade, Microtech or Emerson.

Later on you can get a fixed blade. First get a few folders as you won't carry the fixed blade as much as the folders. Some nice fixed blades can be bought from Cold Steel, Gerber, Camillus and I like the BM Nimravus.

There's a lot of really good stuff out there. I guess you should go for whatever you want (and can afford)

Whatever you get, make sure it's something that you'll be able to carry and use. If you're not in the outdoors a lot, a large fixed blade is going to be a little bit difficult to wear around. If your local laws prohibit knives over a certain size, you won't be able to take a large folder out of your pocket without fearing LEOs. If you're not in one of a few states and/or qualified, autos are out of the question.

Let practicality narrow your choices, then you'll be able to better decide from some knives that will not only be "cool", but will be a useful part of your daily life.

I bought a few Gerber AR3.00s and sold them to my friends so they'd have some knives

. Regretfully I didn't keep one for myself as I sold 'em all

. I only spent like $14 on each of them. However, I did extensively play with them and the grips are secure and comfortable. Teflon washers make the knife a smooth opener and the liner-locks were of moderate stiffness and locked exactly half-way(that's good). I can't speak for the blade steel, but not a bad choice especially depending on how much you can find one for.
Keep us posted on what you're drooling over!
