Hello all,
well I am stuck with this choice, its terribly killing me! This weekend I am going out to buy my first "real" outdoor knife. the other one I had before were cheap Walmart or Canadian tire knives which broke easily. So I am looking for a fixed blade knife, 5 inches or longer, tough, durable in all conditions and weather conditions. Up here in Canada it can get cold, so this knive needs to withstand cold weather as well. I don't really care if the blade is serrated or not. I want this knife mainly for outdoors. I have been thinking about Coldsteel SRk or Recon Scout, but I read that the Recon scout tends to break in colder weather, so I am slowly thinking away from that choice. I have also looked at some SOG knives like the SEAL PUP, but I am not sure.
So can anybody here help me with this choice?
Thanks to everybody in advance

What are your preferences?
Stainless or carbon steel?
Natural or synthetic handle/sheath?
Price limit? 50$ 100$ 200$?
Off the top of my head I'd recommend an ESEE 5 or ESEE 6.
They're tough, made in the USA, and if you can break it, they'll replace it with no questions asked. Period. They also come standard with a very nice Kydex sheath and carry system. Both knives run around 170ish$ shipped most places.

@ Not-too-sharp
the kraton handle looks/feels nice, and i like the hard plastic sheaths (Cold Steel type sheaths)
I dont know about the steel though, I just ant something weather proof, tough, sharp, and easy to maintain. I dont mind sharpening it once in a while

The Becker BK7 is an OUTSTANDING first real outdoors knife, at 70 dollars. Plus you get a nice little 440A slicer...

Fallkviven s1? Excellent quality, hard sheath, kraton handle. It uses excellent japanese vg-10 stainless. 5.1 inch blade too. I have seen it most place for $125-$150US. Here is a picture off google images.

There are a lot of options lol.
If I were you I'd look into the Ka-Bar produced Becker line,
(specifically the BK-7 or BK9) 60ish$ for BK7 75ish$ for BK9, The SOG NW Ranger 50ish$, the condor bushlore and bushcraft can both be had for under 30 bucks and have gotten good feedback. For a tough outdoor steel 1095 is my first choice, it's not stainless but it won't chip or crack in the cold.
Also what all are you doing when your out in the woods? Skinning game, building shelters, chopping and batoning wood, etc?

@not-too-sharp
yeah things like that, used for camping, maybe even in survival situations. a do it all outdoor knife (batoning, carving, self defence) not so much for skinning, because i am not a hunter, but then again in a survival situation i might need too. I also might take this knife with me if I go into the military, so some combat capabilities would be nice.

ESEE-5 or ESEE-6.

+1
Lot of bang for the buck.

Of course Fallkniven are excellent, heck of an edge and very interesting steel.

Haven't tried one, but I've been eyeing Bark River...I hear good things about them.

Becker BK9, with the micarta scales (sold separately)
It's big, tough as hell, a great chopper, and if you check it out you'll know what it could potentially do in a self defense situation :D
The designer, Ethan Becker, designed it as an all around survival/work/combat knife.
It's pretty much everything your looking for.

i have narrowed down the knives i am interested in, i am off of cold steel, because their knives tend to break in cold weather. so i am interested in the Ka-Bar Becker BK-7 (the 9" is too big and bulky/heavy), the ESEE-6, and SOG has a few nice ones too, now I need to decide between those choices. anyone know anything bad or good about those mentioned knives? anything that is important?

Do yourself a favor and think about the Becker BK-2 as well.

Well I test knifes to see if what they brag about is true or not. One maker that has not even braged caught my eye, because of so Many people talkin about them (and not one bad thing=rare) So I tested an ESEE 6. This is one of the toughest blades ever made! Cut chop, cut chop, and will still shave!!! A bit more choping finally made me use 3 swipes with my hone steel then right back to shaving sharp. Molle/Back sheath can be put about anywhere, even upsidedown, and a carry pouch can be had on the front of the sheath for a few bucks. Get an ESEE 6 you will never regret it. enjoy. edgy:thumbup:
Oh and a lifetime warrenty as well.

what do you guys think about the SOG seal knives (pup or bigger size ones)?
i am considering the Ka-Bar becker BK7 and the ESSE6/7, altough i dont like the handles, especially on the Kabar becker, cause when your hands get wet, it will slip easily. thats why i am more for kraton handles
