Which knife to buy......?

If your considering getting the ESEE-6, Get it. You won't regret it.
I had a campanion (bk2) a while ago and it split wood nicely, but lacks any real length for chopping. Also, for combat the short length, high weight, and grivory handles could be a problem. The BK7 is great but the grivory IMO must be replaced, which adds about 40 bucks for the micarta scales to the initial cost of the knife. Which pretty much pays for the ESEE if you shop around. And on the subject of cold steel, their san mai 3 series trail masters and recon scouts are awesome for any weather, but are WAY overpriced. You could get an ESEE 6 and 2 Izula neck knives for the price of a san-mai 3 Trailmaster.
But what it's gonna come down to is what appeals to you. I could reply to this thread 40+ times with a million different reasons to get brand X because it's soooooo great but it won't mean shit if the knife just doesn't do it for you . Get what you like, and preferably get it from a company with a good reputation that will back their product 100%. Good luck your search brother. -Andrew

I would say Fauk S1 as depicted above, Essse 6, Chris Reeve Mountaineer 2 or Bark River. I am fond of Bussse knife designs and craftsmanship, but I could never get the INFI blade as sharp as the A2 steel knives.

If I were you, I'd look at either Becker's Ka-bar line or Sog's Seal line. Where you live the weather is often cold (and gets much colder), a narrow-tang knife can be a good resolve to that--believe me, I've had to use exposed-tang knives right out in the snow and I've had them to take the skin right off. If you get a Becker (or any other exposed-
tang knife, Becker is the best in my own humble opinion) wrapping the handle with paracord--that has often worked for me.

If your price range is 170$, well, you could get both a Seal Team Elite and Seal Pup Elite,
or you could probably get both the Bk-7 (or Bk-9) with a Bk-2 (plus you get a freebie with either the bk-7 or 9). I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket, so to speak, and
having a large/small knife como (plus a little pocket knife) can do just about everything a person could reasonably want. (If you want an even bigger knife--look at the Sog Tigershark, plus there are probably Camillus made Beckers on Amazon or Ebay,
I think there are 10 inch plus blades around by Becker.)

Becker's knives are well-known for tough-use, but so are the Sogs. On one hand, the Sog's are .250 thick, while the Becker's (except the Bk2) are .180. The Beckers are larger
and better choppers. They can hammer. The Sogs can hammer. One is stainless, the other is 1095. All in all, both are excellent choices. (My favorite knife is the Bk-11. Fine knife.) The Elite Seal knives has rasping on the back (good for notching, filing, etc), the
Beckers can easily be changed to different handles.

Whatever you choose, please keep in mind, there is no knife that can do it all. There are always trade-offs. Take a good long look at what you intend to use the knife for, how often you can or will carry it, it's sheath, it's blade material, tang size and type, thickness, grind, blade size. Both the Beckers and Sogs come with good, strong reliable nylon sheaths with protective inserts. (The Bk-7 & 9 both come with a free, ah, I think it's a Remora knife). Those sheaths both have pockets as well--multi-tool or emergency goodies. :) I hope this helps you, I know it's a long read.

You may want to look at the Ranger lineup that Ontario produces. Thr RD series is really a tough knife. Here is a link from Knifecenter to look at them. The 5160 carbon steel is an excellent steel for what you want, and being coated, it is protected from the elements.:)

What are your preferences?
Stainless or carbon steel?
Natural or synthetic handle/sheath?
Price limit? 50$ 100$ 200$?
Off the top of my head I'd recommend an ESEE 5 or ESEE 6.
They're tough, made in the USA, and if you can break it, they'll replace it with no questions asked. Period. They also come standard with a very nice Kydex sheath and carry system. Both knives run around 170ish$ shipped most places.

+1 on the ESEE line of knives. And you can get the RC6 for $112 shipped. lol where u see it for $170?

hello all, well I bought my SOG SEAL Team Elite yesterday, and I love it!
thank you all guys for helping me out, I tried out all of your suggestions, but the SOG fits me. thanks again.
STay safe guys.

with that budget, i'd suggest a Fallkniven.

the S1 fits all your criteria, but maybe have a look at the F1, H1, PHK and A1 models to see if they may suit you better.

Danny, I'm glad you like the knife, & that I could be of help. That knife is .240 in. thick,
& I've personally put knives much thinner than that through the ringer. I replied to your question about 'What to add to the pouch'. However, I got to thinking, and I'd like to add a set of rules I use as a guideline:

Treat your gear with care n' respect--it'll be there when you need it.
Use the RIGHT tool for the job--I keep a pry-bar with my knives n' one on my key-chain,
I never use the points of my knives for prying. Now, Glass-breaking n' hammering, check
their website. :D.

Good luck & happy times with ya new knife,

Dark Seraphane
