I am new to deer hunting, and enjoy collecting knives. I have multiple Bucks including a 55, several 110s, 102, 103, and 105. I had planned on carrying the 103 for field dressing and skinning. Should I also throw the 102 or 105 in my pack?

I carry a big K2 clip folder with M390 blade. Can butcher anything without resharpening. Also carry a 19 1/2" Khukri Kobra style at 1.5 pounds for chopping and personal protection worn across my lower chest and stomach with a shoulder and belt fastened sheath and with semi cross right hand draw.

I'd add the 105, though I frequently use a 110 for field dressing whitetails.

you can field dress and skin with any of those. I would recommend the 103 for a first timer. All you have to do is point the knife upside down for an easy opening of the belly and no risk of puncturing the guts. The 103 is a great design :)

you can skin with any of those, just keep em sharp and the hide will come off nicely.

Yes, I think that you will also need a knife with a point . To cut around the vent. I tried to skin a deer with only a 103 and I was like I need a pointy blade to go with it. I always have a 110 . or a 121 with me when deer hunting.

My favorite deer skinning/butchering knife is the Buck 118; the closest you have is the 105 - take it to supplement your 103. OH

Old Hunter, I have been mulling over the addition of a 118 to the fold.

2tonyb, doug_86, and Hawkeye5, I think that I will carry a second "pointy" blade.

I just ordered a 118 and will be hitting the field with the 103/118 combination. Thanks for all the replies.

For deer hunting I carry an alaskan guide 110,and a d2 charcoal 118.these 2knives can do it all,I use a lot of knives once I'm him,but these2go hunting with me.

Hi ALZS,

Welcome to the Buck forum! As to your question, of the three knives you ask about I'd carry your 102 on my side or in your day pack for field dressing. The I'd use the 103 back at camp for skinning and I'd use the 105 for processing your deer into steak, roast and such (121 is better for processing but you don't have one, thanks Jeff).

Welcome ALZS. I like to use the 103. I can see what others are saying about the need for a point. I still use a 103 but do it a different way. I merely cut the hide, circling the vent. Pull this out and tie it off with a short piece of string. Then open up the belly from the hip to sternum and pull everything out that opening. Won't someone accompany you on this hunt? DM

Alzs you are going to love the 118 to go with your 103. Good luck hunting.
Your welcome J.B.:)

No, Craig , I still eat deer,squirrels,t-bone's, Ham , and all kinds of mammal flesh.Just been away from the forum for a while.
Thanks

I received the 118 in the mail today, and I am really impressed. I like the handle size which is closer to the 105 and the sweep of the blade. I will try to get some pictures of it with the 103 over the weekend.

DM, I will be hunting with some friends.

I used a 102 as my first knife for many years. Easy to handle and not to big. I have been using a 112 now for last few. You stated you had several 110 and they have gutted a whole lot of deer in the last 50 years. I do miss the ease of cleaning a fix blade after the hunt. Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's recommendations. I did not fill my tag, so I will have to try 'em out next year.

Sorry you did not fill your tag AZL . Hunting has been slow here too. You are really going to like that 118 when you do use it . Good luck and

be on the look out for you a Buck 121 while you are waiting on next year.:D

I have been using the 113 the last few years. I'd go with the 105. I have been trying to collect the full line of '72 inverted 3 liners and picked up a 105 on the bay a while ago. When I sent it for spa, Joe noticed a hairline crack in the handle that I hadnt seen. I believe that will be what I carry this year. 10 days to buck season here in PA, very excited.
