Im looking for a new knife and have been researching alot which is how I came to find this site. But Im simply blown away by all the makes and models most of which are new to. So hoping for some recamedations or at least pionted in the right direction. Maybe what to look for and what to stay away from.

I guess the knife would be utility/ tactical, about 3.5'' blade ,folding, like the tanto blade with small serrated portion, thin handle, will be carrying in pocket all the time for anythinig I need it for cutting, prying, scraping ....

Had two benchmades before that I really liked. One was 154cm steel the other D2 was told D2 was better but kind of thought 154cm held a better edge which was only sharpened on one side might be why ? The single sided edge also seemed easier to maintain (im not good at sharpening)

Great site and I will continue to read over it for more info

Thanks

Not wild about aluminum handles but with the grit and caoting it might not be bad. Also just saw a lock test that dosent look to promising

if you saw the lock test on youtube, don't put too much stock in it. I wouldn't put too much stock in spine whack tests anyway.

I've owned a blur and used it as my hard use folder for roughly 10 months and have never had the liner lock fail on me. I guess it just depends on how much "hard use" it sees. I was apprehensive about the aluminum handles also, but they are a lot sturdier than you would think.

P.s. That spine whack test on youtube is garbage, I've hit the spine of my blur on my steel toe boots way harder than that and have never had that happen.

How does the edge hold up?

Is steel from two different makers equal if its the same steel?

I had 154 from gerber and benchmade bench made seemed way stronger I broke the gerber quickly never a problem with benchmade

Thanks

You should check out the Emerson CQC-15. Tanto style blade, can get it partially serrated, only sharpened on one side and has 154CM steel. Sounds like a perfect fit if you ask me. The normal CQC-15 might be a bit large for what you're looking for but they also come in a mini version which is around 3.5" if I recall correctly. Also a pretty great hard use knife, I've put it through hell and it's still kicking.
You might want to check out Ebay to buy one, a lot of the online stores won't be shipping them until Dec. of 2010 due to demand. I ordered mine off Ebay and got it three days later.
Hope this helps.

Will definetly check it out Will you be able to get it in stores I hate to buy a knife I cant hold in my hand.

Is emerson a brand or is it benchmade Its been a long time but i thought the benchmade I really liked said emerson?

I don't want to be a **** or anything but you should never use a knife to pry anything. Like any other tool, a knife has its own proper uses. Look into a mini prybar for your keychain or something.

Ernie Emerson contracted with Benchmade to produce Emerson designed knives some time ago. These days, Emerson handles its own production.

I wouldn't worry about lock tests if I were you. Plenty of people (myself included) also carry folding knives that don't lock at all. Learn how to use your tools, and you won't have any problems.

I know knives are not made to pry with. But I know I will pry with it anyway at some point. Just letting you know the abuse it will take. Mini prybar not a bad idea.

Have not seen the 940 but will check it out.

I know a lock Is not necessary and have used many knives with out them.
But I am sure that i do want a lock and would like it to be strong. I think a knife with out a lock is safer than one with a weak or faulty lock.

Thanks

Benchmade 940 and emerson CQC-15 both look awsome also really liked the super CQC 7.

What is it called when the blade is only sharpened on one side and why dont specify wether it is or not

Thanks

Have you checked out the Kershaw Groove with the tanto tip?
It's a very nice frame lock folder with a nice beefy tip.......although
I don't recommend prying with a knife, but hey, it's your money. ;)

Good luck and let us know what you decide to go with.

It is called "chisel grind", and usually only indicated if it is a chisel grind.

The liner lock test on youtube everyone is talking about is probably mine.. The blur I am using is a user but not that bad.. I agree spine-wacking isn't a great way to test, but I am using VERY LITTLE force to make the lock give, thats what scares me about it. I am not slamming the thing hard at all and it gives. Is it a faulty knife? Maybe... I wouldn't even call my test "spine-wacking", more like "spine-tapping". I do think this knife is still good for lite cutting tasks. I have heard countless others claim that their Blurs are rock solid, so take it as you will. Myself on a personal level will never buy another one.... But to each his own...

This one is mine
