which knife to carry

I bought a buddy a Blur for his Bday... he LOVES it... that said... he recently had a major problem with it. He was on a wilderness rescue recently and used the blur to cut a branch as a makeshift slpint... the serrations crumbled... more damage than you can imagine... he does not care... the blade did not actually break in two... so it is still useful. It was the standard tanto/serrated flavor.

My advice to you, cjrenegade82, is to check out the Spyderco Paramilitary or Military. They simply cannot be beat for the price... I realize that they cost twice what you have in mind as a budget, but HEY... when I started out here I had a $100 budget and the first knife I bought after research here was a Sebenza!!! I will NEVER regret it!

If you ABSOLUTELY cannot spend more than the cost of a Blur, I would recommend a Benchmade Griptilian... I cannot imagine WHY you would want either tanto OR serrations, but to each his own... personally I think both are useless compared to a more conventional plain edge like the Griptilian 550HG (full size) or 555HG (mini).

I bought my brother and his wife 555HGs as a gift... neither were really knife people... My brother CONSTANTLY thanks me for it... he absolutely loves the knife.

Still though... I've been around the block, and am no "fanboy." All things considered, I would pick a Spyderco ParaMilitary or Military above any other knife. Their materials, ergos and fit and finish are just better than any Benchmade or Kershaw I've ever owned. Either way, if you hang around here long enough and keep an open mind, you'll end up with one, the other, or both soon enough.

Groove looks very nice not sure if I like the grooves in the blade and lack of thumb stud.

Kbrasmodeler thanks I do see some listed as chisel grind now

what are advantages / disadvantages?

Thanks

I like the tanto because the blades seem stronger yet a sharper piont to work with as I like useing the corner for certian things and use the front blade for smaller more controled work. The serreated edged seems to cut better on tough materials when you dont keep the edge assharp as you should. Im sure all can be done with a regular blade just as well Thats just what I have used moslty.

Have not yet looked at the spyderco

I never posted a budget but was hoping to spend under 150

Thanks

Spyderco Stretch II with ZDP189 blade and FRN handles. Not a chisel grind or serrations. Its a full flat grind that is laser sharp 3.5", thin handles, ZDP holds its edge for a loooong time (but don't pry with it as its known as being brittle). Very comfortable in pocket as it has a 4-way clip (tip-up, tip-down, left or right handed carry). It has all screw construction so it can be taken apart for cleaning and its in your price range.....

I think most people who start really getting into knives start to shy away from tanto tips and serrations. But that is part of the sickness is finding out what works for you.

I would suggest something from Benchmade with the AXIS lock if you want a really strong lock. Plus it is fun to flip open and closed when you are bored :foot:

The 950 Rift is my favorite model and I carry one every where I go. It has 154CM steel which is pretty easy to sharpen and holds a decent edge. Much better steel than what is on a lot of the cheaper knives.

Edit: Might also want to include your price range so you don't get any sebenza recommendations :D

My first end all beat all knife was a Benchmade CQC7... 1995. I was 18. It was easily the best knife I'd ever seen... I remember the jerk at the Mall knife store not even willing to take it out of the illuminated bulletproof glass case to let me handle it... I had to let him hold the cash and let me play with it... Anyway... I thought that knife was the cat's meow... It had a tanto point and serrations. Like you, I liked the "corner" of the knife for using as a pressure point for cutting. I had the knife for a few years before it went away and did not sharpen it once. Funny... knowing about knives now, that knife was dull as a butterknife... literally! I pretty much relied on burrs and nicks in the blade to cut stuff... The "corner" of the tanto was completely flattened and rounded by the end. After I bought my Sebenza I gave it to my cousin...

Honestly... I think you should give a plain edge knife a shot.... and clip point or drop point... Keep it sharp and I think you will be impressed! I think Knifeworks.com is giving away a little (and actually pretty nice) knife sharpener with the purchase of a Benchmade... I'd still go with the Para or Military and just pay the $12 that that sharpener costs though...

Thanks for all the advice everyone. All knives recommended look good and are contenders. I leaning toward emerson and benchmade just not sure if I the look of the spyderco. Also reconsidering a serrated blade.

I have more questions about blade steel, chisel grind vs regular, styles of locks among others. Is there a search tool I can use on this site so topics already covered do not have to be repeated.

Thanks

;)hi cj renegade82 asking what knife to carry is like asking which girl should imarry.you are looking for an all purpose knife which is usually whatever knife you happen to be carrying at any given time. there are so many realy great knives available. iown several bucks always areliable choice. kershaw gerber crkt afriend swears by rough rider. a great part of the pleasure of buying a new knife is the joy of shoping for one .find acouple of good knife stores and enjoy the buying experience chuckv

The liner lock test on youtube everyone is talking about is probably mine.. The blur I am using is a user but not that bad.. I agree spine-wacking isn't a great way to test, but I am using VERY LITTLE force to make the lock give, thats what scares me about it. I am not slamming the thing hard at all and it gives. Is it a faulty knife? Maybe... I wouldn't even call my test "spine-wacking", more like "spine-tapping". I do think this knife is still good for lite cutting tasks. I have heard countless others claim that their Blurs are rock solid, so take it as you will. Myself on a personal level will never buy another one.... But to each his own...

This one is mine

If your blur is not locking up correctly, you should send it back to Kershaw for them to fix it.
