Which knife?

I know that many or maybe even most of the people that frequent the Blade forum have some sort of collection of knives. I also know that you all have your favorites for different situations that come up.

Here's a question I've been thinking about for awhile now. If and when the brown stuff hits the fan and you've gotta get out quick, which knife or knives do you grab and what do you do with the rest of your collection?

My collection is what I have on hand to use. Sold the other 150 blades (mostly old folders including an original Marbles Safety hunter in excellent condition), over the last few years so my decision is easy. I have a stout German made bowie, a Becker BK-7, an old trade knife, a case XX fixed blade (the wifes) and several SAKs, a leatherman and a CRKT Apache II folder. They all go.

Longbow50,
If I get SNAFU then my Next Gen Ka-Bar Fighting Knife, my Fallkniven F1, my CRKT STIFF KISS and my Gerber AR.3 are coming with me. The rest of my blades can stay where they are, with those four I have everything covered as far as blades go. I'd hate for it to get to that stage though.

In a dire situation, I would grab my Military PE and Black Ka-Bar.
However, I keep my knife collection in an airtight ammo can and could easily grab it and go if the situation called for it. :D ;) :D

I'll grab ahold of my SOG Trident, Spyderco Chinook, Leatherman Supertool, AND Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri, WHEN the SHTF...

ahh...the difficulty of 'the CHOICE!'...

Lets see, after grabbing my P13 and ammo, my SKS carbine and bandoliers, Remington 870 and ammo, water, food, and my wife\kids? "Honey, don't forget the .22!" Should probably grab my fishing rod and tackle box while I'm at it.

I throw my two Ontario Machete's in the truck. I throw my sharpening 'kit' (basically a tackle box)in the truck also. Strap on my John Greco MST IV, my SOG Powerlock, my Benchmade Mini-TSEK and Princeton Rage in a Bright Eyes pouch. Drop my SAK Soldier in my front pocket along with a Zippo ligher. I then hand my wife my KA-BAR combat knife in kydex sheath, my BM AFCK, my SAK Hiker, my Gerber multi-tool and a second PT Rage. I already have a saw and a shovel in my truck.

Here is a reality check though-we recently went on vacation for a week 'down the shore' as we say here. I wanted to take a weapon, but thought leaving my pistol in a rented house while we were out and about was too risky (no carry here in NJ). I looked over my 'big' knives thought about it a second and grabbed my KA-BAR almost without hesitation. I'm not sure why I chose it over my other fixed blades, but I did. Wait-yes I do know-I trust it. Nice blade to have under the pillow if you can't\don't have a gun.

Mongrel! Where have you been amigo!!?

You KNOW you have to have a Busse when the SHTF, after all it is the extreme performance leader.

Sorry about that I couldn't resist :D

In all seriousness, I keep a GB Small Forrester's Ax in the truck along with a Tramontina machete. My vest, which hangs over the seat, has a SAK RuckSak and a Fallkniven A1.

It would be nice to have time to select what you take with in a S.H.T.F.
situation but more often than not you will NOT have that luxury.

Thinking that you will have time to put together a kit of some sort on such
sort notice is ....at best....flawed. Anyone who's been involved and emergency
situation, such as discribed, will tell you that you are lucky to get out and away
to saftey with the clothes on your back. That bring up the key point here......

If you don't already have it on your person then don't count on having it to use.

That is why I carry mininmum equipment on me . or very close at hand, 24/7/365.
No, you don't have to look like "Tim the toolman" to do it either. All it takes is
close observence ot where you go , your daily enviroment , how you live etc. to
determine what you will need to carry daily.

For myself I find that a light lockback in the 4" range, a good stout 4 1/4/" stockman,
a leatherman superetool, a mag light, a large bandana, and a way to carry it all is the
barest minimum to get me out of trouble until I get help. All these things in addition
to my walking cane is enough. Beyond that it take a bug out bag to get it done.

Thanks for the nod, it meant alot to me. I've been around. Reading alot of 4-6 page 'discussions', even the one over at your place. Do you ever get tired wearing those rubber galoshes-no I mean waders? Sure seems to be getting deep around here lately :D Quite entertaining actually :D I'm still pushing those $18 Ontarios, I just can't seem to destroy one (yet)....hmmmm I bet I know someone who could....

@Tightwad-believe it or not all of that stuff I mentioned could be grabbed in under 5min. if I am at home. If not? Well I always have a 4" folder, SAK Soldier or Hiker, Powerlock, and PT Rage on my belt. Oh, and a lighter also.

I usually keep the SAK workchamp in a pocket, along with a Spyderco of some type. With a whole workshop full of knives, I do as Ash says when I have to grab and go, and get an axe, but before that, the scattergun always comes along. Cause whatever the situation is: "good, bad, I'm the one with the gun..."

RobertH,

Wasn't that pic from the movie "Evil Dead"?

BTW I like your Avatar. Capt. James T. Kirk has always been one of my favourites.

That should be from the end of Evil Dead 2, or the beginning of Army of Darkness. Can't remember which, but I am leaning toward Evil Dead 2. Bruce Cambell is a funny mofo.:D The scene with him fighting his own hand can't be out done, LOL.

It is indeed Army of Darkness, a sequel in the Evil Dead series, and one of my all time favorite movies. Hail to the King, baby....

if the **** hit the fan...

Above anything else I would need a spare pair of glasses

id have my fallkniven mod p and leatherman wave but theyre not really sturdy enough for all survival tasks, I keep a cheap whetstone in the car along with boots and backpack and change of clothes and food and water and what not.

if I could lay my hands on my fallkniven A1 id be happy

If I could grab a small axe/hatchet/machete too id be extra happy

if i could grab my crossbow and bolts and bits too id be extatic

if i could swap my bow for a 12 bore and a couple of boxes of shells id be even happier (although theres a chance of re using the crossbow bolts, the beast is so powerful alot of the time when it hits something it bends the bolt...) :D

I think that what Tightwad said is sound. I always have mt B.O.B. with assorted items in it for a situation as mentioned in this thread. As far as knives, the bag always has a HI Khukuri of one shape or another in it. As far as other knives go. Whatever I had on at the time of SHTF. Today that would be Camillus Madd Maxx, and a Camillus EDC, an Emerson Lagriffe, and a Leatherman Wave. The bag contains all other items I would need for a short term bad situation.

It would take me too long to find all of the gear I would want to have in an emergancy; that is why I have a BOB - 3 of them, in fact.
My wilderness 72 hour BOB has a Spyderco Moran drop point, Victorinox Swisstool, Leatherman Micra and a Cold Steel LTC Kukri.
My 36 hour urban BOB has a Leatherman Supertool 200, a Wenger Handiman SAK and a Meyrco/Blackie Collins Buddy System.
My gear bag for my job, has a Leatherman PSTII and a Victorinox Hunter.
Most times I am also carring a Leatherman Wave and a Spyderco Calypso Jr.

I wouldn't think about grabbing a knife - my Benchmade Griptilian is already clipped to my pocket. I would probably get my pistol though, since I don't usually carry it.

The rest of my stuff can stay and fend for itself. "Stuff" comes and goes. Things like personal freedom and body parts are harder to replace.

Scott

Well (Jeff), I'd grab my Busse Steel Heart, 2 Mean Streets, 2 Leatherman Waves, Victorinox Fireman (until I find an Outrider), and an SAK Officers.

These are prepacked in our BOBs.
