I recently made about $200 dollars at a baseball game. Being thirteen, thats alot of money. I have been wanting a new folder so..... I have decided on either the bm 551 grip or a spyderco tenacoius. which should I get?

The tenacious is great for under $40. Actually, probably the best knife $40 will buy!

Benchmade Grip's are also great for around $70, but there are other excellent knives in that price range as well.

If you don't mind paying the extra $$ I feel that the Grip does warrant the price increase over the Tenacious. But you surely won't be disappointed with the Tenacious either.

To make a long story short, let your budget decide because there is no wrong choice here!

what do you have already?

out of those two choices, Id get the tenacious tbh. when youre young, its good to save money, and the tenacious is plenty nice. you cant carry often because you go to school, I know it sucks but its not worth it to start going totally crazy if you cant even use your knives.

enjoy your vacation, mine ends next monday ;_;

i'd suggest a Benchmade with an Axis lock and a fairly straight cutting edge (no recurve) and a blade length not exceeding 4". not sure what all currently fits into that catagory, but anything that does would get my vote.

Another vote for the Benchmade 551. If I were going to get a Spyderco that size I would get the Salt. You dont have to worry about rust. GOOD LUCK! You are at a good age to start collecting. Just buy a nice one now and then and when you get older they will be worth something. Kevin

I would go for the Benchmade. I recommend you visit a store near you to hold them, I would also check out the mini-grip. The mini-grip is easier to EDC, IMHO.

13 year olds cant edc.

Its more of a rare occasion carry. Im not disagreeing that a mini griptilian might be a better fit for those occasions, but even I cant really edc and Im 20 since the place I spend the majority of my time says "no knives or you go to jail".

Its basically found money so why not go big? Spyderco is selling the CMP-D2 paramilitary for under $100 with free shipping. Its one of those things you’ve got to move on now. Or they will be gone forever. Well at least gone at that price.

p mcmanis, the first thing in my pocket when I get home from school is my becker necker, and the last thing I do before I go to school is take my knives out of my pockets. I am not an ordinary 13 year old, I mean I carry 5 blades with me on the weekends for crying out loud. (necker, byrd cara cara, and my stockman slippie) So to answer you statement, yes I can and yes I do edc both knives and other items such as my zippos, my fenix eo1 flashlight, my t tool and my laser pointer to entertain my dog.

I have to agree with the Tenacious. It's worth way more than the $35.00 it sells for. You won't be disappointed. And that way, you can put the rest of the cash away until you find something you just can't pass up!

You... My friend, are going to make a great knife collector. Enjoy your new knife. And If you don't mind taking advice from a 30 year old, I would save all your receipts in a manila envelope or something similar.

That way when your my age or older, you can look back and say to yourself, "I still have that knife, and I paid "x" for it in 2009. Or, "I sold or traded it for "x" back in 2012 etc."

I wish I did that. I didn't get my first Benchmade until I was about 16 years old. Heck, I didn't really know about Benchmade knives until then. I also got a few Microtechs about the same time. (I was working at the time.) I would have kept more of my knives today I believe had I logged them all down.

You could even use a spreadsheet to keep track of things. Right now you may be saying to yourself this sounds boring, or I don't want to do that, but I have a feeling you will be a lifelong knife lover and may appreciate that information one day. I just started saving my receipts, and it's scary how much money you can spend so fast!

All of that said, start it off right maybe the Benchmade, (Hint, Hint):D maybe the Spyderco, you will get a great knife either way. Don't forget sharpening stones/equipment. You will need a decent sharpener if you don't already have one. Best wishes in this amazing hobby we all love so much!

I carried a knife regularly since before I was 13. I don't think it's fair to make generalizations about what one may carry because of their age. That being said, I would personally go with the Tenacious. I feel like I'm almost stealing the Tenacious at the price it's offered. It's a helluva lot of knife for the price.

and pray tell, did you carry a knife to school and what years were you in school?

because you cant take a swiss army knife to a school in TEXAS. I remember in katy (which was only 45 minutes from where I went to high school) a girl got expelled for having a comb that looked like a switchblade.

and school is where you spend the majority of your time until youre 20 years old unless youre truant as hell.

you say dont make generalizations, but you spend 180 days out of the year at school until youre 18, so in the next 5 years he will be able to carry MAXIMUM 2.5.

I agree with masters, which is actually why I recommended the tenacious. It looks like OP wants a knife. Im fine with that, so I suggested the cheaper one because its more than enough knife and it allows him to save the maximum amount of the money he has.

thanks glock&surefire and tony for the kind words. I think ima go for the benchmade. Now I have to decide which bladeshape. As for sharpening, I use a fine benchstone, then use a 800 grit ceramic rod to get a burr on each side, then strop on a piece of leather with white compound on it to knock the burr off. On realy dull knives I start with my belt grinder on 100 grit. As if collecting knives isnt enough, I also have began to make knives. Ive made 2 so far, 1 from a sawblade and the other from a lawnmower blade.

As you already have some knives in your collection, NC, you may as well treat yourself to the Benchmade, as it is one of the finest EDC knives you will find. The Benchmade is silky smooth and has what is arguably one of the most secure locks available on any knife. Both the Grip and Tenacious are excellent knives in their own right, but when it comes down to a knife made in the States vs. one made overseas, I know which one I would pick.
