I have a few grand into about 20 fixed blades, including some small ones I carry there when I hunt (Benchmade 190, Fallkniven F1, ESEE Izula, and many more). If I'm not deer hunting or overnight hiking: I usually stick to a folder. The revolver on the hip usually takes the place where I put my fixed blade anyway![]()
What are the differences between the GEC 53 Stockman and the 66 Calf Roper?
The one thing that was keeping me from really liking the 301 was the lack of full flat ground blades. I looked around last night and found something just about ending. I just picked up this guy for a steal, it was dated 1995 by the seller. It appears to be a 3-spring FFG but without the Long Pull (I didn't know these existed). Any details on it would be great. Steel type, manufacturer, etc.
I'm definitely going to have to mod the tip of that Spey blade (bottom left picture): It's a bit too unprotected for me...
Macchina, you bought a modern design Buck 301 - a great, heavy duty working Stockman, made by Buck (at one time in CA, now in ID). 1995 is the correct Date Code "C" next to the model number - your's was made in the old CA plant. The earlier Buck 300 series knives had the long pull; the first ones were made by Schrade in the mid - late 1960's, the later ones made by Camillus in the very late 1960's until 1986. All of the 301's were made of stainless steel (specific type of SS has varied by manufacturer and date) any of them are good knives. The Buck 307 you asked about in your OP was built by Camillus. OH
Ps The version you grabbed is one of my favorites - all the modern enhancements for a working knife (stainless steel liners and three stainless steel springs - eliminates blade crinking) but flat ground blades - I prefer that over the current blade grind)
small correction, that is a furtaker muskrat with two different blades - pretty versatile.Awesome, thanks for the info.
I'm also in the market for a classy (Queen our GEC) Stockman as well so keep the pictures coming.
As to the Muskrat: it just doesn't do it for me. The blades are basically the same and I like different styles and lengths all in one knife.

Jamie, that Dixie in stag is very handsome, any chance of seeing the mark side too?
