i didnt know the difference between Tooling leather and a couple others i had been looking at

is there specific kind i should be looking for? or will most work?

also what tools are the basic tools ill need to get started making sheaths?

ooo

I use 8-10oz vege tanned leather as do most people I believe. Basic tools? A knife to cut the leather, some type of awl or drill to make the stiching holes, I use either a small drill bit, a stiching awl, or a nail sharpened to a point in a drill press. Also some type of threading as well as large needles. And finally contact cement.

There is a whole sheath section in the forum - lots of info

you want Vegetable tanned leather, not chrome tanned
It is tanned with different chemicals and less corrosive to your blade

I also liked the Paul Long videos, but he uses stitching machines that you won't have.

My fiance does most of the leatherwork for my knives. I got her the Burrows video shown above, and it's worth every penny.

and 'the count' strikes again !!!

off to click on vid... :D

eta: actually someone just sent me one of his videos, not sure if its the same one but its the same guy...

My leather work just didn't look clean and defined, not that I've done all that much, but I paid very close attention to detail. Paul Long kept telling me to get better leather.

Wicket and Craig skirting, you have to buy a side at a time, around $150.00 w/shipping at my location. Choice of colors and they will split it no charge. If you get 10-12 oz. and have it split to 8-9 it will be more true to thickness and the back will be more even.

It tools so nice and looks so good, made such a big difference in my work and my enjoyment of it.
