Which LED to get?

Actually, if you're thinking of sticking with the PT or that class of light, you might also look at the EternaLite. I have the x-ray model, you can find them for under $40 these days, pretty easily. The ETernaLite runs on 3xAA instead of the PT's 4xAAA. The EternaLite has some very cool features. It'll float if used with lithium batteries. It is waterproof. It has many different light modes, including flashing, instant-on, and a number of dimming modes. I use the dim modes as a nightlight, ratchet it up a tad for reading, etc. Outstanding usefulness. The X-ray also has a mode where a fifth LED that is embedded in the body of hte light is lit all the time under super low power. The light can be seen through the EL X-ray's translucent blue body so you can find the light in the dark.

The PT's only advantage over the EternaLite, from whatI can see, is that you can apparently swap incandescent and LED models in the same body. That *is* a very cool feature though.

WOW...LEDs have come a long way in the last year. Here’s what I have…and my plans for future purchases:

Right now, I have a Photon II (red) on every keychain (wife's included); (3) CMG Infinity lights + AA Lithium batts on lanyards in my military tent (red), civilian backpacking tent (white), and pocket for field duty (red) - I borrow this one out a lot; a PT matrix headlamp (backpacking, military (red lens option), etc.), a Streamlite Baton lite (briefcase), and 2 of my 3 (3-D cell) Maglites converted over to LEDs (all for car / home use).

I was going to pick up a PT impact, but I am waiting for the new Arc LS to arrive on the scene. I have a feeling that this light may place my pocket CMG, Tec-40 (if I get a red LED Arc LS), and Streamlite baton lite. When they come out, I want the 2AA version.

As for incandescents, I have a red lens on my PT Tec-40 (with lithium batts, green case, stored in my LBV) and it's a great red-lens flashlight for hard-duty military use...in a way, it is almost too bright. I also have a Streamlite ProPolymer Police version 3C lite (I love this one!). Finally, I have many AA maglite lying around...but they are not worth the batteries I put in them...when compared to the good LED options out there. That's it...

Rigormootis, the Streamlight Propolymer 3C is another light that I am interested in. Is it brighter than a 3D Maglite? What is the diff. beween the standard 3C Propoly and the Police model? Thanks!

The streamlite is brighter. Plus, the streamlight has an integrated center-spot / wide-angle beam. This lights up a room better IMHO than a maglight. Plus, the 3C is just 'small' enough to be used as a tactical light in conjunction with a firearm...the 3D maglight is a bit too big for this & has no on/off tail cap. Finally, the SL has a 2-pin bulb for safty and peace-of-mind - the Maglite has a 'normal' bulb.

The only difference between the standard and police models - as far as I can tell - is that the police model has no side-clip, but a small lanyard attachment instead.

Here is the cheapest place I have found them($20!!!)
