Which manufacturer produces higher quality BK&Ts? Camillus or KA-BAR?

Short of going to a brick and mortar and pulling a Moose (have them lay out ten of what you want for your inspection so you can pick the best one) then you are really SOL. If you are pretty picky (not that it is a bad thing mind you) then about the only real solution is seeing it firsthand at the time of purchase. You will more than likely pay more, but B&M stores have higher overhead, so they gotta make that up somewhere, and the ability to see what you want firsthand before you buy is a pretty big draw I think.

We have all had some troubles out of pretty much everywhere at one time or another, but at the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference, and unless you are the one physically doing the picking, you may have a pretty hard time being satisfied.

Where are you located?

I'm in Manhattan which makes things very difficult. Walking out of a store with a 7" or 9" knife is pretty much going to land me at Riker's Island. I've been picking up all my knives from the post office so walking down the street with big boxes doesn't set people's spider sense off.

My recent acquisitions have been:
Ka-Bar BK7 (awaiting replacement or refund)
Ka-Bar BK2 (awaiting delivery, this is my wife's from Amazon direct)
Ontario RTAK-II (arrived perfectly)
Camillus BK9 (I'm returning it. It's actually a Ka-Bar but not worth the price)
Glock Field Knife 78 (arrived perfectly)
Camillus BK2 (I'm returning it. Looks like it came back from Libya)
Kershaw Oso Sweet (arrived perfectly and I love it)

Once I get the returns handled, I'm going to Tomar's to buy a BK2, BK7 (if the current one is refunded), BK9 and a couple of Remora's (to go in the standard nylon sheaths for the 7 and 9) AND.... depending upon everyone's input, either a Necker or an EsKabar.

So everyone gimme their input, Necker or EsKabar!

Thanks as always for reading.

Whatever you get, get a Kabar. The Camillus's I had, were perfect, no issues, no problems. I can say that so far, every Kabar BKT that I have seen, heard, or owned, is either perfect, or replaced by Kabar immediately. Even some knives that have been abused, have been replaced.

I do believe that Toooj's kitchen is cooking better BKT's than ever before. Tougher, sharper, and better QC.

Stick with Kabar, you'll get a great knife, or Toooj will take good care of you.

Why not the Camillus? You say the Camilluss have been great too, so why only KABAR? Purely for serviceability factor??

BTW +1 with Guyon on Tomars!

Yeah, basically, and I like to recipe to the blades Kabar is putting out. You can get service, and Camillus is out of the BKT business. They are still good knives, but given my preferences, for all my users, I own Kabar. Toooj has the magic formula for tough blades with good edge retention and ease of sharpening. Camillus had the same, but, well, they ain't around anymore.

Hey, I gotta speak up here. I don't want to wildly bash Chestnut Ridge, but I did have a slightly negative experience with that outfit.

The website shows a number of units in stock for any given item. Those numbers are wrong. Many people have complained about this, not just me.

I placed an order that just barely qualified for free shipping. One of the items was actually out of stock and discontinued. They removed the item from my order and charged me for shipping. They did it without my input on the subject. If they would have established communication with me I would have gladly added some other items from my neverending wishlist. They would have made a bigger sale and I would have been satisfied.

Considering the OP's streak of rotten luck, I thought he might want this info.
My apologies if Beckerheads take issue with it.

When I ordered my BK-2 from CRKS, their inventory showed they had 1 or more in stock. They charged me, then told me they were out of stock, it would be two weeks.
I like those guys, it just seems like they are a brick and mortar store, and internet orders aren't their focus.
I wanted their micarta version, so I was willing to wait. I feel that in today's market, customer service, up to date inventory, and actually shipping the correct undamaged and new product is key to success.
I really like Dale over at The Knife Connection, cause he gets it.
