Which medium sized decent quality folder should I buy ?

Hi all,

A question which has probably been asked a thousand times, but I still am stuck with a problem.
I need a folder with a plain blade, drop/swept point, with clip that does not stick out far when clipped to a pocket.
Size should be aproximately 4 inches closed and handle G10/Micarta/titanium.
I already own :
. Microtech Mini Socom : great knife but bad clip placement

(for my use => rides too high)
. BM 350 (Mel Pardue) : dagger shape looks to dangerous

. Boker Speedlock : auto => cannot be carried

and no clip
. Boker Omega 2082 : very nice but (also) bad clip placement

. BM Mini Stryker : my favorite

but tanto shaped

Please help

My shortlist consists of : CRKT S2, Camillus junior Cuda and Rekat Pioneer 2 (how far does this last one stick out of pocket?).

Any ideas or other suggestions.
All help is welcome.

Philip

Al Mar SERE 2000 seems to fit ur requirment. I still Spydercos every time for a daily carrying/utility knife. Also BM mini AFCK and 705 are all very nice ones

I'd go for the mini-AFCK. The CUDA only comes in spear point (like your 350) and tanto point, both of which look menacing to many people. Go for a plain edge, non-coated mini-AFCK. Mine's built like a rock.

You should buy the one You like the most. Who cares what the rest of us idiots think?

The SERE 2000 is one of the best production folders I have seen in quite awhile. I highly recommend it. If that doesn't float your boat I would look at the Benchmade axis locks.

Mmmmh,

The Sere 2000 is very nice and probably very good quality (I have a small carbon fiber Al Mar which is incredibly sharp, ouch ; special heat treatment for their ATS34 ?) but is rather big (I guess 4.7 to 5.0 inches closed).

And I do care what people think (not everybody is a knife knut who likes everything sharp), knives already have such a bad reputation (but this is another discussion). That is why I keep my Spyderco Shabaria safely at home (greatest looking knife I have).

The BM mini AFCK seems to fit the bill. Any opinions on the Pioneer Rekat 2 and CRKT S2 ?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Mr Idiot 1 and 2

,

If the scare-factor is not an issue, what is in your opinion the best folder which fits my criteria ?

If you want a blade around or slightly under 3", here are some good choices:
Less than $30 - CKRT Lightfoot Urban Shark
$40-50- Spyderco Delica or Calypso jr. Lt.wt.
$100- Benchmade 705 Axis Lock
$300-Small Sebenza

I own all these and they are great useful and non-threatening knives.

Philip357, I truly can not answer your question in a straightforward fashion. You seem to understand the parameters of knives you like well enough to make your own decision. If you asked a question about what I thought about any particular knife, I might be able to be more helpful. But asking a question about Hundreds of knives is kind of hard to answer. Buy what YOU like. Buy the best you can afford.

My reply was partly in jest, and partly serious. Only you can decide what knife you like most. I do not understand why so many folks ask other folks what to buy. As I have no experience with most of these knives, I have little real advice or experience to offer. My knives are predominantly custom forged fixed blades.

But I do like my Kershaw Ken Onion mini-task knife. It open Fasters than a Boker speed-lock (yup, got one of them clunkers too) and is a much nicer knife. It sure isn't too scary looking. But you Can scare the heck out of some folks if you flick it open and brandish it in their face and make grimacing gestures. Try that.

I do really like the looks of the Shabaria, however. I don't think it looks very scary looking at all. Now the Civilian, that's another story altogether.

(nobody ever understands me. don't worry about it. It's my problem, not yours)

You mention the qualities of the knife. However, what do you need it for?

Tactical (read self-defense), hard use, light cutting. Is one handed closing important (then ignore lockbacks)? Snap opening (quick draw for Tac use)?

Aside from the dubious sharpening job, you can't go too wrong with a BM710 Axis. From what you describe, and your implied budget, you might also consider an Emerson CQC7 (although it's a combo blade), or an EDI Genesis.

If you like the Microtech mini-Socom but don't like the clip which makes the knife ride high hanging out of the pocket, you might like the new MT Socom Elite. It has a redesigned clip that rides the knife low in the pocket. Plus it sports their new microbar locking liner.
appx. 5_1/8" closed and 9" open with a 4" blade

You could put nacho cheese sauce on it...

There seems to be a lot of approx 5 inch folders around (Sere 2000, MT Socom Elite, Emerson CQC7) but in the 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 inch group it seems that only BM has your approval (AFCK & axis locks).

Full Tang Clan : it will be used for everday carry and light to moderate ("non-tactical") use .

ThomM : I like the Sebenza (visually that is, I never handled one) but they seem a bit too much an art piece to me considering the price (I would be afraid to use it).

The CRKT S2, Rekat Pioneer 2 and Camillus Mini Cuda do no seem to get your approval (almost no reaction).

Paracelsus : Kershaw Mini Task is an interesting suggestion

Could MT and AL MAr please make a mini Sere 2000 (Sere 1000 ?

) and a Mini Socom Elite !

CRKT, REKAT and Camillus all make good knives. I would probably carry the Cuda, but only because it is near the front of the safe. Any of the knives you mention should be fine for your intended purpose so the choice really is up to you. Pick the one you find most appealing. And, you can always buy the others later.

By the way, don't overlook the Kershaw whirlwind.

Check out CRKT

The EDI Genesis has a clip that is designed such that nothing sticks up out of the pocket (other than the clip). I own one and like it very much. One caveat is that I've heard that they seem to be having quality control problems at the moment.

REKAT Pioneer is an excellent knife for general utility. I would get the uncoated one, as it looks less threatening, and I believe they will soon be available with modified D-2 steel. So much cutting goodness in such a little package!
