Which medium sized decent quality folder should I buy ?

Spyderco Calypso jr. Lt.wt. is a tremendous knife. And it rides very low in the pocket.

Really don't want to be a crowd joiner here, but the Sebenza, large or small should fit your intended uses nicely. If you just stick with the plain and get through those first few scratches on the Ti, you then have what you want. They are a relatively good bargain when you factor in their position on the quality curve. They are a great bargain when you factor in the customer service behind the product.

Though I am not BM's biggest fan, the new 940 may be exactly what you are looking for, though I am unfamiliar with the clip placement and exposure out of pocket.

I've got a bunch of Spyderco knives and like them all, but think they may be fast becoming the Smith & Wesson of knives relative to their corporate position as to only LEOs being worthy of some of their non-auto knives.

Philip357,
I have a REKAT Pioneer II and it is a great little knife. The thing is rock solid, the thing is built like a tank. The only bad thing about the knife is it rides rather high in the pocket. The top of mine sits about 3/4-1 inch above the pocket. I have been considering moving the clip to the other end of the handle. I just need to find a button head allen screw to match the others, then I can go ahead and move the clip. Have you considered the REKAT Carnivore Cub? It is suppose to be about the same size as the Pioneer but the clip is setup for tip down instead. I would think the Carnivore Cub sits lower in the pocket. I really like the Rolling Lock over a liner lock!

My favorites in that size range are Spyderco Native (in 440V) and Kershaw Avalanche. Then again I am reasonably easy on my knives, so 440V is a good choice for me: not very tough, but cuts really well.

Philip,

You should go to your local full service cutlery store and take time to hold, and inspect each one.

It's good to get people's opinion. However, I discovered that everyone has a different preference for knives that is as varied as asking someone what their favorite food is.

People buy for different reasons too. Some people are very brand loyal, others like certain designs, etc.

Most of the knives mentioned in these forums are good knives since most avid knife collectors are not going to be buying some hardware store special which comes in a bubble package.

The reason why you might want to consider a BM710 is because you have enough "similar" frame/liner locks in your current collection. The BM AXIS lock and SOG's arc lock are a new approach to locking folders.
In addition, the 710 is the right size, the construction materials you want, and within your budget. Although I have complained about the factory sharpening job, the rest of the knife is beyond reproach. The action of the knife is very, very smooth making it very safe to open so you won't accidentally "bite" your fingers as you would on a stiff opening blade.

Although it is mass-produced, the BM 710 feels like a very high-quality knife.

Thanks guys (girls ?) for the advice.
Still hesitating a bit (I have to buy based on opinions ; in my area the only way to feel a good knife is to buy it by post-order first and feel it upon delivery

If I do not buy what all of you are suggesting immediately (I would love to though, but for evident reasons I have to chose 1 or 2), I already have a shortlist for coming christmas, new year, birthday, ...

Spyderco Starmate, all the way. Just got one, can't beat it. Blade is the thickest I've ever seen. CPM440V rules!!!

I broke down a few months ago and purchased a small plain sebenza. And i can tell you with no hesitation i am glad i did. The quality of this knife is beyond reason it is a tank plain and simple. And it was made to be used. It is well worth the investment.

My personal opinion is the benchmade 720. It is a real kickass knife all around. I don't think you could regret gettin it.

However i agree that you should go out to a knife shop and get a feel for everything.

I also have a 350, and it is the knife i always cary. It hangs perfecly in my pocket and is light as hell. I guess the spearpoint is a little dangerous lookin, but it is an extremely practical knife for everyday carry.

I have heard a lot of good stuff about the SERE2000. It sounds great to me, but sein as i have never held or used one, i can't really make that call.

My personal opinion is the 720 of the existing 350.

I tried a SERE 2000 tonight. It is a really well made and heavy duty knife and i believe anyone would be happy with it. However it is rather lage and heavy to cary all the time.

My suggestion is still either the benchmade 720. It is a sturdy and great knife, but without being huge or awkward to carry. You can feel it in your pocket, but it is nothin like the heavy duty SERE 2000.

Also, i still don't see why you are ruling out your 350. I have one that i cary with me everywhere. It is great small knife. I can clip it on my pocket or belt, and i have no idea it is there.

Decision is yours though.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
As I already mentioned I now have my wish list for the coming months/years (I will certainly try an axis-locked

Benchmade).
In the meantime I ordered (at Knife Outlet) a Rekat Pioneer 2 with black swept point (for more heavy work), a CRKT Urban Shark and a Gerber 3.25 SLG.

The last one seems to be kept very silent (no publicity, reviews, ...) but the size, blade shape, materials (ATS34, G10) and clip fit my needs perfectly.
Now I just hope it is a good knife too ... I will keep you informed.
