WHich is the type of mora featured in mors korchanskis Book.... I'm thinking of getting a couple new ones to try out I'm looking the the errikson red wood handled with a 3 inch blade and the red handled one with plastic handle...I think the 510 or 511..... it's a hardgrip...looking for something as a slicer that, that'll stand up to tough work if needed...

I've not read it, but I think I remember someone saying the 510 was the one he liked. Either way, it's the best Mora (knife?) ever made and there is no excuse for not including one in your next order. :D

Just don't get mad when you handle it and wonder why you own so many other knives at ten times the cost and half the utility. ;) :foot:

Spooky....Thanks... Couple of quick questions if you don't mind... Is it light enough to wear a s a necker?? and what is the oal...roughly?? thanks...

I'm sure you have seen this one belonging to my son before Riley, this is light enough as a necker !

Sure-

I wear mine as a neck knife often, but I think some folks would say it's towards the upper end of the spectrum for how heavy a necker should be. It's certainly doable though, and that's where you'll find mine hanging if I'm around camp usually. The sheath is very light so it's more amenable to this as well.

Overall length is just about exactly 8", a hair over maybe. Blade length is about 3 5/8" . I've found that this is just about my ideal blade length for a smaller fixed blade knife. 4" seems to be my upper limit in this class, or no less than 8.5" for a 'chopper' knife. But I digress...

To help sway you ;) :

This is my favorite knife that I've ever owned or held, and is the standard by which I judge other blades.

The Mora that Mors Kochanski refers to in the book "Bushcrafting" and is pictured in the photo section in the back (at least in my edition), is an Eriksson #2.

I have read where since the book was published he has, he has praised the Eriksson 510 highly.

Spooky,

I have always been a fan of the 780, how do they compare in your estimation? BTW, what is the bag?

Thanks RR, hope it helped a bit!

Mneedham- The 780 is also a great blade and one that I've gifted to several family members in need of a good knife. One traveling with that wouldn't be under-knifed. Places where I feel the 510 shines are in controllability and comfort. I like the less wide blade of the 510. The handle, as another forum member described it, 'just has it'. I'm not a big fan of guards, which causes the 780 to lose some points in my humble book. In the end the difference will be based on personal preferences, but it's worth looking at the 510!

Oddly, it seems like my 510 has been able to take a better edge. Probably just biased though! :p

The bag, if I recall, is a Micheal's of Oregon Possibles Bag, meant for blackpowder shooters. I got it in the bargain bin at a shooting store because it was missing some straps.

not to hijack this thread but I looked on the mora of sweeden website and the 510 and 545 aren't listed and I m wondering if they still make them?

Do yourself a favor and run over to Ragnar's site for some of the best deals on Ericksson 510 and 545 mora knives. Bet you can't buy just one:D It does not appear as though the 545 is available at this time.

If like one with a small guard on it go with a 780(tough as nails) or maybe a red clipper. I ordered a 510( carbon steel) for the fact of a neck knife and it doesn't have a guard on it. I haven't tried any of the of the wooden handle ones yet. of course that might be my next move just because they so cheap.

Just get one and try it out. What do you have to lose for just trying it out. If you don't like it you can always use it for a lender or beater knife.

510! 510!!! Get the 510!!!!111
I love the 510, and as others have stated, the handle is really nice, but if you wrap it with some 550 cord, it gets even nicer. If you do wrap it though, it wont fit back into it's factory sheath, but a leather sheath is easy enough to make yourself.

I'm sure you've seen the picture of mine floating around here somewhere.

I don't know if they still make the 510/545 lines of knives or not, but if they don't, that is a shame. They are great knives and one of my favorite Mora designs. I may have to buy another 510 from Ragnar just to make sure I have a spare if they did in fact stop making them.
