  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Which of your axes is your favorite?

I like this Peavey Mfg. Hudson Bay the most.

This one is my favorite - pre-war German hatchet with fantastic handle.

What is the length and head weight on it?

The weight isn't stamped on it but I'd guess it's 1-1/2 pounds. The haft is 14-3/4". I found this one and a near mint pre-Permabond Plumb hatchet at an estate sale. $8 apiece. Both came with sheaths. That was a good day.

The Plumb will go to my grandson who will be born next month. :)

I would not mind having on of those I am probably young enough to be your adopted grandson. :D

That seems like a very useful size to me. I have an old Hults Bruk 1 1/2lbs hatchet on a nice 16 1/2" haft. While it hits hard and can be swung two handed, the haft does get in the way when carving.

Are you going to fix that Plumb up in any way before giving it away or leave it as is?

The Plumb will be cleaned and sharpened. That's all it needs. It would be silly for me to refinish a 60 year old tool that still has most of its factory finish.

In the spirit of the thread here is my current favorite. FSS Pulaski. Custom octagonal haft stained with dirt and mud.

That's pretty cool. I've handled hundreds of Pulaski's, hung scores of Pulaski's, and never has it occured to me to try an old school octagonal handle.
Any other markings, or just the FSS?? (I'm kindof a Pulaski brand snob)

My favourite axe is the one I happen to be using at the time. Different axes for different purposes.
Many of my axes have names (All Female).
Was at the woodheap this morning using 'Big Bertha' & 'Big Bertha's Sister'. Both KELLY DANDENONG.

Peg actually did a WIP thread on that pulaski hang. Search pulaski in the forum and you'll find it.

My current favorite is my FSS Pulaski. Just a good axe. But ask me next week and it might be different.
I have to agree with this. My Pulaski gets considerably more use than any of my other chopping tools. Great for all kinds of dirty work and splits firewood rounds with ease. I suppose if I were to sharpen it it could be used for limbing and chopping but that's where a chainsaw comes in.
