Which one as a gift xm-18 ,sebenza, carrillo?

collectability aside, i would recommend the sebenza. if you can pick up an xm at a price you are comfortable with, then you absolutely should. sebenzas are readily available.

but the xm is much thicker and heavier, rendering it less carryable imo. ive put my xm away for several weeks at a time, and i don't typically miss carrying it.

but with the sebenza, for whatever reason, i always go back to it. its a better slicer and is shaped better for pocket carry.

ive owned severaly strider folders, sng's, smf, ar, and i always end up selling/trading them. they are nice knives, but i just never get very attached to them.

the xm is the best of both the sebenza and sng, imo, and better ergos than either. like a strider, an xm is the folder you want in your pocket when you have to cut yourself out of car wreck.

this may not make sense, but if i had to keep only one, it would be the xm18. but i think the sebenza is a better knife for edc.

Hello Morimotom,

You say the XM is the folder you want in a car wreck, but I think a better choice for that situation is am umnumzaan. Not only is it just as strong as an XM-18 (except for the spanto blade), it also has a glass breaker and cuts better.

"except for the spanto", therefore by your own admission its not the best choice.

Of the ones you mentioned,I'd go with the XM-18 with a 3.5" blade & the flipper version too!Yea!:DI seen a pic of xm on these bourds & it had a wharncliff blade! That could possibly be "The One"

Now if you're talking' customs, that's a whole nother animal.I been contemplating on whether to get my first totally customized,hand-made (folding/tactical)knife by either Todd Begg or Mike Snody.I'm sure there's a lot of others with equal or more experience & skills, but these two makers' (Snody/Begg) work, really just screams to me!!You know whatta I'm sayin'?:o:D

[edited]sorry bout that, back to reality.I am in fact saving, scrimping, scrounging all the cash I can to get a Large Regular Sebeza with the "EYES" CGG.I WILL have that knife if not in hand, then on order before this year is done!

Do you have both the Umnumzaan and a XM-18?

I do and Morimotom is dead on the money with his post IMHO. ;)

I think my friend here is right on!

I prefer my 3.5" XM-18 over my Strider and CRK folders for EDC. If I were you, I would try to see/hold each of these knives before you decide on one. They are all very similar, yet very different.

I'd say a totally custom designed (by you) silver contrast graphic Sebenza would be pretty unbeatable.

hello,

first of all, i have never even held an umnum. so i cant comment enough for the op.

my xm is a flipper, which i don't normally care for. but it acts as a guard, protecting your hand from slippage. if really "aggressive" cutting is necessary, this, the thick blade, and the spanto tip, provide a higher probability of success.

a glass breaker is a nice feature, but it should not be viewed as a primary tool for that application.

ive had to break out windows, and using my baton swinging full force sometimes doesn't provide the desired results.

hypothetically, i would rather have a blade i could cut through the roof of an auto rather than a glass breaker, which i may not be able to generate enough force to use. besides, the butt end of the xm should be nearly as good as the pointed breaker on the umnum.

ymmv...

And considering how glass breakers are designed, I don't see why one couldn't break the glass with the tip of the blade on the XM-18.

how did this thread turn from the best gift to the best knife to have during a car crash? haha. seems like you'd be better off with one of those rescue knives with a punch. in a situation like that, you also probably wouldn't want a knife with a pointed tip, especially if someone else is in the car.
