Which one first?

Hey!....what's to worry about.....you're ordering something sharp from Chris Reeve....how can ya' go wrong?????

I have no doubts that you will really like the mnandi. It will be even sweeter given that you have never handled one. Good choice with the Box Elder. My favorite mnandi is my Box Elder. Here's a picture of mine (courtesy of true north). I need to pick up an ebony or african blackwood one of these days.

I would (and did) go with a Small Sebenza w/ wood inlays. My uses for an EDC knife are pretty much the same - open envelopes/boxes/snacks, peel fruits, etc. Mostly used in office environment, and carried in business/business-casual type clothing. I have a couple of Large Sebenzas, but feel they are a little too big for my taste. Small Sebenza fits my EDC needs perfectly. I've never liked the style/look of Mnandi for some reason, which I guess is a good thing - it sure has saved me allot of money. Maybe it'll grow on me one day; until then, a Small Sebenza is my perfect EDC.

I say skip the doublle thumb lugs, it tends to increased the liekly hood of it opening on hanging up when you pull it out of the pocket.

I must agree with this since the double lugs I've handled easily 'wave' on the way out of the pocket.

Mnandi ordered yet? :)

My uses for folders are usually for quick cutting chores that range from light to medium, so smaller knives are becoming more routinely carried. The Mnandi and small Sebbie are both perfect knives, each in their own right.

Bigger chores, or those of relatively long duration are greeted with a fixed blade now.

As a matter of fact....:)

I decided to go with the Mnandi since I have not owned one before, and because it has the highest potential for carry time. I sent the MO off today, so I hope to receive it within the week!

As luck would have it, a friend of mine who no longer uses his large Sebenza agreed to sell it to me for a very fair price -- which further sealed my decision to go with the Mnandi.

I'll post a picture when it comes :)

John, you went and bought my mnandi didn't ya?

I won't speak for JohnnyKwyst, but the box elder he posted looks different from the one TNK has listed. I just noticed it sold, which isn't surprising since it was a beautiful piece!

Matthew

Oh, you're right, Looks like a different one.

Not having an infiinite supply of moeny is rather bothersome.

Ah ha, it was you!!!!!!!!!!!! :grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy: Seriously, that is a beautiful knife and I would be lying if I said I had not been lusting after it when it was for sale. Congrats, I'm glad another BFCer got it if I could not. ;) ;) ;)

Boxwood Elder seems to vary in appearance from one batch to the next, probably like all natural materials. CRK had a beauty at a show I attended this year and the boxwood had a lot of the 'birdseye' nature seen in the TNK picture posted here. That is the prettiest Boxwood Elder, IMO.

I bought my box elder a couple of months ago so, no, it was not me who got the one currently at TNK. :D The one currently at TNK does not really float my boat but some may like those types of inlays. Similar to how I don't like bark ivory mnandi's, although some seem to like those a lot. I noticed yesterday that the one currently at TNK was still available. It must have sold today. Maybe it was Starfish! ;) I'm surprised how long the current one at TNK took to sell.

Just came in today....:)

That is a stunner, Matthew. The Box Elder Wood is superb. Nice and light looking on the smaller knife.

Enjoy :)

Mark.

Heya, Matthew - that Box Elder is a stunner. By any chance did you get that one from David B.? If so, you know what a great guy he is.

Hi Jeff ~

Thanks for the compliments! Yep, got it from DavidB, definitely one of the good to deal with :)

I have to admit, I love the inlays, but I am not quite sure what to make of this knife. Perhaps I will just have to carry and use it to understand ?

Matthew

Matthew,

The inlays are pretty durable, from my experience. I carry a snakewood Mnandi and have never had cause for concern about the wood. The blade has held up well too. Haven't chopped any concrete blocks, but have cut a lot of stuff.

Perhaps this will help - with a Chris Reeve knife, just about anything that can happen to it may be fixed for a reasonable price. Even if you use your Mnandi hard, and decide you don't like it (won't happen :) ), you can either sell it as is for a great price, or have it refurbed and move it on the forums.

Very nice box elder you got! What do you mean by "what do make of this knife?" Is it smaller than you were expecting?

I took the knife out of the box again this morning to see if I could try and understand what is giving me pause. It is not smaller than I was expecting.

You know how the small Sebenza is a light knife with respect to weight, but conveys the feel of strength in the hand? I think that I was expecting the same characteristic to extend to the Mnandi. Silly, eh?

However, I can't induce any blade play with my hands (surprise, surprise  ), and it doesn't appear immediately obvious how I might disengage the framelock (another big surprise  ), so I think I'm just going to have to carry and use this knife so that I can appreciate it more.

Tough assignment for myself, huh? :)
