I like motorcycle camping trips, and I usually take a week to ten days each summer to do some riding and camping. Last time it was the Blue Ridge Parkway; next summer, it will be to the midwest. I usually try to camp in state and national forests at fairly primitive sites. In the winter I like to plan hypothetical trips and think about gear to pleasantly pass the time. As a knife enthusiast, I tend to bring more edged tools than I really need, so out of curiosity:

which of these would you bring for camp use to complement a hatchet? Why?

SAK Huntsman
Bark River Mini Canadian
Bark River Northstar
Spyderco Native
Boker Copperhead

Becker Crewman

If I couldn't carry my Fox River, I'd go with the Northstar. I'm a huge advocate for the 4" blade and I do the most woods chores with one. The hatchet can cover your chopping needs but it isn't the best for fine work. Pocket knives are nice but in the words of my buddy Terrill, it is a "pre-broken knife".

Your best bet is to make a trinity of tools a la Nessmuk or the BSA. The Northstar is your main utility blade, the hatchet is your chopper and the SAK like your huntsman covers other tasks. The saw on your SAK is one of the best out there btw. It also throws the best sparks from a ferro rod.

If you are in CT, feel free to contact me if you ever need someone to go woodsbumming with. I'm always game! Oh yeah, one more thing. The winter isn't just for planning hypothetical trips. If you want to camp, there is a great trip coming up over MLK weekend next month.

Usually I do go with a sort of modern Nessmuk trio of hatchet, fixed blade, and multitool. I am just thinking of experimenting with a bit of simplification; for example, the multitool is convenient, but redundant since there is a tool roll on the bike. Last year, I went with the Mini Canadian. It was mostly great, but a little short for food prep.

Thanks for the MLK invite, but I don't think I can tear myself away. My woodsbumming this time of year is a bit limited due to the hunters in my neck of the woods (the Quiet Corner).
