Which one of these multi tools would you use for wilderness camping:

Vic Spirit
SAK Trekker
SAK huntsman lite (2 knives, saw, sizzors, LED light, tweezers, pen etc.)

I dont carry a fixed blade...illegal in most areas I travel and wilderness camp.

I have both the trekker and the huntsman lite, both are great tools,

Personaly between the two,if thought I would need to build shelter or cut fire wood with the tool I would choose the trekker for the locking blade and larger saw, other wise I would take the huntsman lite, for the scissors, the lite and extra blade.

If it’s going to be your only knife and/or light weight is a major consideration, I would take the Trekker (though if light weight is a deciding factor, a lighter SAK such as the Camper, Hiker or Farmer would be a good alternative).

If you carry a separate locking folder and if weight is not as critical, I would take the Spirit.

1) Trekker
2) Huntsman Lite
3) Spirit

...if I had to choose. In actuality, I would be comfortable with any of the 3.

i camp quite a bit and do more day hikes/climbing-and i do it all year round

its more about how you equip yourself-and how you camp-if you camp like the 1900s you might well need an axe, large saw, rope, and large blade etc

i used to build fires years ago-now-its not ecological nor safe

i use a stove and am pretty much self contained with everything i need in my pack

i use packaged and convenient food-

-ie rarely do i need to improvise or use things on the land

-and i try to be equipped but also always weight concious-and

ive never been the kinda outdoorsman whos ever actaully NEEDED a fixed blade or a large blade-what i need is something on my person-

take your huntsman -with led -cooool!-has all you need i think-or both and decide later

i take my ranger for all camping and climbing (old habit and old friend) -sometimes the outrider i have

for camping i like openers, scissors-really needed for trimming blister related tape or bandages, 2 knife blades, an awl and mini screw driver for glasses, and a saw -id think the huntsman-or the trekker-

saws are nice if you need to use green branches for cooking or otherwise-even if rarely needed using a stove and pots nowadays

frankly its so rare i use a blade for anything other than food -but there is something satisfying about using a larger locking SAK on a helpless piece of salami, cheese, or hard roll

I have a Trekker and a Spirit, both excellent products. For the woods -- the One-Hand Trekker, even if I have other knives with me for playing with. :)

Depending on your gear, though, I would reread stevedenver's post and consider the Spirit for maintenance of your equipment.

I would take the Spirit paired with a robust, dedicated knife.

In what kind of wilderness area would a fixed blade be forbidden?

+1 on the Ranger.

It's got the blades, scissors, saw, file, bottle and can openers plus a few extras tucked in on the back side.

A great all-around knife for use in the country and the city.

Look into a locksmith. It a large lockblade model comes with saw, file, can/bottle opener, flat head and phillips screwdrivers. It what I carry along with my mountaineer 2

If it was going to be my only knife or largest knife, the Trekker. If I was pairing it with a fixed blade or large locking folder, SAK Farmer (Or, sticking to your 3 choices, Huntsman). I'd only take the Spirit if I had lots of gear with me where the extra tools such as pliers might come in handy for repairs.

I got the Trekker (normal version) and Huntsman. if I can take only one it's the Trekker.

But why not both? These knives are so small, you just don't notice them.

I allways take one with a saw. The Huntsman and Ranger are my favourite models. Just the right tools for most tasks. The Swisschamp is great, but with a lot of tools I will never use.
