Which one-piece? Help...

I've been seriously considering buying one of the one-piece knives recently, as a general all-purpose camping/fishing/whatever-else-comes-up carry. I've also decided that I like the spear point better than the clip. I thought I was all set...
...but what size? The Project I, or one of the Shadows? Is size the only difference between these knives? Does anyone have any suggestions as to the merits of these choices? Thanks!

You can't go wrong with the Project I. The long blade with the heavy tip makes for an outstanding camp knife. My first training of thought was like yours and wanted the spear point. I bought the MK VI and relized the blade was too short and tip too narrow. If you go with a spear point, I would spend it on the Project II. These are both heavty knives and will bring you a lifetime of service. Chris Reeve will also refinish and sharpen them for $20 bucks. Can't beat that! Hope this helps. RW

The Project II is the clip point, as is the MKVI, and the Mountaineers I & II.

The spearpoints are the Project I and Shadows III & IV

If you are looking for a truly all-around knife to cover everything from camping to survival, the Project I is a good choice as it can be used for chopping and digging very well.

If you just want a camp knife then the Shadow IV is a good choice as the shorter blade is a bit more manageable around a campsite.

I have had some of these knives made up in some different variations. I have Shadow IV's with single hilts and Project I's with no serrations. Project II's with no serrations are coming.

Thanks, guys! I am now leaning towards the Project I (though I suspect I will somehow end up owning every knife CRK makes eventually).. any suggestions of where I can find Project Is in stock on-line?
Willpower? What willpower?

Of the midsize fixed line, I believe the Sable has a slgihtly higher grind than the others, which is probably nicer for camping and fishing-type chores. W/the 1/4" spine, I doubt you're sacrificing any noticeable relative toughness. Among the smaller fixeds, I believe the Mountaineer I has the highest grind.

Personally, I think the Sable high grind w/the Mountaineer short, straight clip pt would be pretty nifty.

I had a real hard time trying to pick between the Shadow III or the IV. I went with the III, only because I felt I could carry this one more often and get more use of it. If I lay the Shadow along side my large Sebenza in the opened position the Shadow III is almost the same over all length...the blade is a little longer on the Shadow.

If you plan on any kind of chopping or such go with the IV or something else.

Tough choices for tough knives. I have a shadow 4 that is awesome. For general, non macho use I really like it although everytime I get a project in stock it sells before I can use it to make myself keep it! I will get a project or two for myself before this is over....

For camping, one knive os a tough choice. A folder (Sebenza), a multi-tool and either a Project 1 or Shadow IV will do you well.

When hiking/backpacking and every ounce counts, the Shadow IV, or smaller might be a choice, but when weight is not a consideration, there is not much you could not do with the first threesome mentioned.

The Shadow IV is usually with me camping, but, if I had to survive in the wild with minimal gear and ONLY ONE KNIFE, the Project 1 would be with me.

Novadak,

Try calling Dennis Wright who posted- a great guy. Great service.

On-line: Knife Art, AZ Custom Knives, NW Cutlery for starters.

As you stated, you will probably end up with more than one. I started with the Project 1. It is a great all-purpose knife, but pretty big to carry. The Shadow or the Sable are also great all-purpose knives, but lighter. You really should try to handle them before deciding unless you can afford to buy them all!

The horror.. the horror..
I went out yesterday to buy a micra for my mother for mother's day, and noticed that the local knife store had CRKs.. in stock.. I tried out both the Shadow IV and the Project I, and ended up getting the Shadow IV (The Project was just a tad too heavy to be comfortable as a camp knife for me) and it is really beautiful.. only problem is, now that I've just dropped $200+ on a camp knife, I'm terrified of using it, breaking it, etc.. I'd feel much better about losing a Cold Steel SRK (which the guy at the store seemed pretty adamant I should have gotten instead) than my new baby... am I being too paranoid?

Also, has anyone had a problem with the knife slipping out of the sheath? I'm just wondering because it doesn't seem to have any snaps or anything on it..
Thanks for all the advice!

That is odd about no snaps on the sheath. My wife and I each have a Shadow IV and both have snap straps that go over the guard to hold the knife in place. We purchased the second one just a couple of weeks ago. In any event, you cannot go wrong with a Shadow. We use them on hiking and camping trips. IMHO, the best advice to get over paranoia is to take it out in your yard and use it, or take it camping and do the same. Cut some rope, chop some branches off some trees, use it for making dinner, or whatever. Once you get a few scratches on it you will not worry about it and it will become a pure joy to use.

This is distinctly odd. I just looked at the CRK website and it looks like the sheath for the Shadow IV does indeed have snaps on it. When the guy at the store brought out my sheath I suspected that it was made for a different knife (the Sable IV) and said as much, but he swore that this was the sheath for the Shadow IV. I just looked, and indeed, the sheath I got looks like it is for the _Sable_ IV. They didn't have many other Reeve knives there, I'm thinking maybe they got sheathes mixed up and sent whoever bought the Sable home with the Shadow IV sheath and vice versa. Weird, or what?

I think I'm just going to get one of those molded kydex or concealex sheathes made up, since I doubt that the store still has the correct sheath. Ah well.

Go back to the store where you bought the Shadow IV..
The Sheath should have a retention strap on it..

It definitely sounds like you got a Sable IV sheath. I just traded a Sable III and it is also a pocket type w/o the strap. If the store does not give you satisfaction then call CRK. I have dealt with Chris directly as well as his staff and they are a pure joy to work with. My bet is that they will trade you for the right sheath if the dealer does not give you satisfaction.

I just spoke to the guy from the knife store, he seemed happy that I'd called -- it was pretty much what I'd suspected, whoever had bought the Sable IV got the sheath for my knife and vice versa. He said to bring it in and they'd see about getting me a new sheath from CRK or refunding some of what I paid. Cool.

1. Chris Reeve Shadow IV is a great camping knife.

2. Looks like the forumites came through for you on this one.

3. Chris Reeve Shadow IV is a great camping knife.

I just came back from the knife store, they called CRK and are having the new sheath shipped in. Hopefully it will come in time for me to take my new knife camping this weekend!

Thanks again for all the advice!
